Too much dye lite?
I just filled my water system last night for the first time and all was going better than expected for my first attempt.... :) So, I decided to add a little dye-lite and use my black light to check for leaks, but when I went to add the dye lite in.... I think I put a little too much in... I meant to add a drop or two into the reservoir but ended up with a little more than expected... I know it says that a cc can work for a whole gallon, well ive got less than a quart of water running through my system with a lot more than a cc of dye lite. I didnt pour it in or anything, just a little too much, should I drain the system and try again or will it be ok?? I did a search on dye-lite in the forums and it doesnt appear that anyone has had negative effects from using it...
 |
You probably won't see any adverse effects temp wise, however it will have an adverse effect on the thermal properties of your water. If you really put a lot in you will see it won't "thin out" and change to green or bright blue like it should, rather it will stay in some part in the color it is in the tube. I wouldn't worry about it, but if you are then drain your system and get more distilled H20 and dilute it. I'm sure you know but for future reference you need literally one or 2 drops for an average system.

hey with that dye-lite... who uses the blue?
i have some of the green and some of the blue from caseetc.com the green is super strong. only a few drops needed the blue however SUCKS, its not even as strong as food coloring. and i didnt even check the glow... its just the color it adds to the water.. it looked NOTHING like the samle that the ocwc site had with the strong blue color in the water... just a faint light blue after adding about 1/2 teaspoon to 1/4 gallon. anyone have similar results with the blue? |
I have some blue Dye-lite and I haven't been impressed. It seems to add a slight amount of color but with any additives (blue ice, Water Wetter, etc...) I can't see any difference even with blacklight.
|
The dye I used is blue, and looks great under my black light, (probably not as dramatic as green would be though).... probably because I used more than I should have... go figure. But without the black light the hoses are clear. If I had to guess how much I accidently poured in, I would say the equivalent of 10-15 drops worth, more like a dribble.

I think Joe's pics there give good justice to what green dye-lite looks like under the black light. It is VERY strikingly green and VERY bright. Also it is handy for finding any leaks that you may have as it really jumps out at you is you do have a drop somewhere. Seeing how this was the original intent for Dye-Lite, it makes sense. :D |
that was the intent of it originally, to show where leaks were in systems containing water. We just think it looks nice ;)

I made these pictures a while ago:
(I've actually discovered that the "right amount" pic is actually TOO LITTLE dye lite, it gets a lot brighter than that if you add some more) They quite clearly show what happens if you take too much of the GREEN dye-lite, the blue one works a completely different way. http://www.procooling.com/~iceheart/...te_5_Drops.jpg http://www.procooling.com/~iceheart/...e_10_drops.jpg |
I've got some blue stuff from case.etc. I recommend avoiding it. I have a clear cover over my reservoir and that stuff isn't even glowing at all. I'm going to pick up some of the green stuff and use that.
|
Ice, those are some sweet pics man. You camera pics up black light very well.
|
I have had luck with Glowbottles dye. It seems to glow pretty well, even the blue. I'll have pics of my rig soon to show the effect.
|
That's not a blacklight, that's a UV tanning bed. Blacklighted it's a much more "solid" alien blood style look to it.
|
heh, that stuff looks radioactive or something
