About to order heater core
 

I am going to order this heater core (Unless anyone gives me a reason why it is not good)

Does anyone know if these are copper? THis is the rad from a 1975-1977 Chevrolet Caprice Classic. With out air. Price is 19.95.

Also, the dimensions are:
Length: 6 1/8''
Width: 2''
Height: 9 1/2''
Hose Size: I 3/4'' O 5/8''
Does the height mean the total or just the finned part.

PS this in going in my InWin q500. Anyone used these rads in that case? OR want to recommend a different one?

Those "should be" overall deminsions from very top to very bottom. If it is or not....

Well 5/8" is 1/8" smaller than 3/4" so it has to be backwards.

I believe they are talking about INLET and Outlet on the core not ID and OD--the picture of it, kinda shows it also. My 2 cents and that looks like a nice price.

You are correct!!! I didn't notice that.

After looking far and wide for heatercores, I found that almost all places list their sizes for the radiator fins only. The tanks are not inclused in the size usually.

just to give you an idea, you can normally add 1-2" for the tanks.

And yes, almost all radiator tube sizes will be measure in OD, and quite often the outlet and inlet are differant sizes

The chevy heater core you are looking at is all copper and brass. Here is a link to it:Chevy heater core.

It is about 11" high over all BTW. It has a 5/8" and a 3/4" inlet.

I am using the Ford Econoline heater core ($23.00) at Auto Zone. It has both inlets at 5/8" so you can insert a 1/2" barb or solder 1/2" copper fittings right on to it, as I am (will).
Size is almost exactly the same as the Chevy 77 heater core and all brass and copper. I haven't finished my water cooling set up because I have had too much work to do lately. Sucks!

i use a heater core out of a 1991 Ford Escort. Look it up at www.heatercore4u.com It's kinda small but it does the job. Ford cores are usually better because they inlet and outlet are usually identicle. Chevy's usually have a 3/4 and 5/8 tube while Fords have (2) 5/8 tubes. BTW i got the core at Autozone for $29.99:D

check out this core http://www.heatercore4u.com/2-192.htm You could fit (4) 120mm fans on that thing, one of the biggest cores i have seen. BTW it's out of a 1979-58 Ford C, CT, BEF, FA5, 001 (whatever that is, or at least thats what it said on the site)

that would be more useful I think, a bit thicker, but it'd fit 2x 172mm fans.

that ford one couldn't go into too many cases, wheras with that chevy one there would be a couple of ways to mount it

I have that Caprice heatercore. It performs outstandingly well with my setup, but it is overkill big time for straight water cooling. On the plus side, I can run fans undervolted and still get great temps. On the minus it is a bit more challenging to fit in a case.

whats the smallest heatercore you guys know of that is NOT aluminum. im lookin for a 120mm fan size core...

I think the Chevette heater core is the smallest.

It is 6 X 6 1/8, not sure about the copper/brass element though.

Then there is the Pontiac Fiero heater core. I wanted one of these but they were $56.00!

Just do not forget to add 1.75"-2.25" for the top and bottom tanks. I went to the autostore and measured the outer dimensions on 5 diff heater cores. They were all larger in the height direction by 1.75"-2.25" .

the black ice is the smallest heatercore I know of that will fit a 120mm fan, and isn't Al.

does the black paint on the black ice hurt performance ?

is it paint, or some other process to colour it? I honestly don't know. It seems to perform well though, check Joe's radiator roundup

i think a bare copper one might be better, like the d-tek heater core, they dont pain the fins, just that tanks and sides.

i went to autozone and they didnt have ANY 6x6 (or close to) heater cores... not even the chevette. guess i will buy online.
i did look through their book and found a smaller rad. and this is all the info about it:

Lookup the Geo Tracker's heatercore.. It's just a hair larger than the blackice extreme. Unfortunately, it costs about the same.
