Nylon barbs on metal block bad?
Hi,
I want to put some 1/4" NTP 1/2" nylon hose barbs in a water block. Is there any reason to use brass instead? I can't find brass in my local hardware store. If I use goop, is there a high chance of leaks? Thanks! |
I can't see it being a bad thing. I thingk it may actually seal better as the nylon will streatch a bit. You just can't put to much pressure on it or they can break, but I highly doubt that will happen. I can never find them locally otherwise I would have already done it with my AL blocks as brass/cooler is not supposed to be good touching eachother. Just don't feel like ordering them though.:D

the other nice thing about the nylon is that the id of the barb is bigger than the brass equivlent. I 4 different hardware stores in my area and all the brass they carry is smaller id diam. than the nylon. I also went with the nylon.

Excellent! Thanks for the help.

Personally I'd prefer to have brass, it just seems safer to me, also you can drill out brass fittings a bit, I wouldn't want to do that with nylon

another thing you have to think of, and I dont know the answer to it. But how will nylon react to the chimicals in any addatives you use. Will it get hard and brittle like some plastics? Also will it deform over time and crack? Like I said, I dont know.

Nylon is a very good material to use, I use nylon and PVC for all the fittings in my Chip-Chillers, they give excellent reliability and they flow very well.... I do however prefer the Brass on the block approach, but mainly for performance purposes. you see the inside surface area of a brass fitting adds to the total heated area of the block, giving me even more performance. This is however so small a difference, at best I can only refer to it in a theoretical way,
