Introducing... "The Black Ice Evo Series"

Look what showed up in my mailbox today... "The Black Ice Evo"

The pictures speak for themselves, but a bit of background... This is a Black Ice Xtreme w/ a beautiful paint job. Wilbert from HWLabs is still experimenting with colors, but this is definitely a taste of things to come. A paint mixture is used on the outside of it while just a very thin coat is used on the fins. Wilbert tells me that this has an almost negligible performance impact. I'm going on break from UCSD this next week, but afterwards it is time to start work on the Chilli Pro watercooling project :). Thanks Wilbert!

The camera does little justice to the metallic finish.

Kevin 03-22-2002 12:00 AM

I do agree. I'll try and take another.

That is sweeeet. TNT2 when are these coming out into the world? I am planning a new box with all new H2O cooling and hopefully a custom WB as well;) . That paint job would look very nice with the lexan shroud I am planning to build.

WebMasta33 03-22-2002 12:08 AM

Why doesn't anyone send anything to me! Oh the agony of it all

Very nice btw :D

Kevin 03-22-2002 12:15 AM

Argh... I'm trying to take better pix here, but I guess my camera isn't up to the task. Here's one that shows the metallic reflection of it, but it is much brighter in reality than it is in the pic.

I'm going to try once more and snag a better pic of it.

Wow beautiful ;)

I saw the pic of these new BIs over @ cooltechnica.com
There's also a mention of Red one, too...

BTW it seems like not only Xtreme, but prime and pro will also come in different colors as well...

Kevin 03-22-2002 12:40 AM

I've tried w/ light sources in front of the BI, behind the BI, both, etc... this was the best pic I could get.

I love it! duh... probably even cooler in an H2O cooling system yeah?

that looks so good kevin, is it deeper than the normal BI? it looks it.

hey willie, how about a version for 172mm fans?

To my knowledge, it is the same as a Black Ice Xtreme, but I'm sure Willie can confirm/deny this.

Once again, Willie can answer this better. But just from my conversations with him, it seems that making one of these is quite the ordeal, and I doubt there is enough market for 172mm fans to justify making a whole lot.

Brad 03-22-2002 01:09 AM

yeah, I knew both questions were more directed at our favourite tnt2 user ;)

TNT2bluz 03-22-2002 02:08 AM

The magic is in holding one of these.

Kev's cam or my cam can't do justice to the finish.

Brad 03-22-2002 05:12 AM

kev, maybe you should go outside on a really sunny day and take the pics, that sometimes helps

mashie 03-24-2002 11:55 AM

How about a pic using the flash?

superart 03-26-2002 10:50 AM

I may be wrong, but this rad seems pretty small. has anyone tried it out thouroughly?

Yes many folks have used the Black Ice Extreme. It performs very very well, especially for a radiator so small. They can handle a hot T-Bird or XP, probably 2 of them in SMP with no problem.

djskinnyb 03-26-2002 12:18 PM

Slightly off-topic....

Kevin, how is the Chilli Pro case holding up? I was curious about the long term durability (screw thread stripping, etc) of the case.

Are there any mods you have made you would considar vital for anyone to do?

And lastly, hurry up and get that watercooling setup in there...I wanna see that. :D :D :D

yea, i know the black ice xtreme is a good radiator, but i was under the impression that the Black Ice Evo or whatever its called is not the extreme but a different new model. So the BI extreme and BI Evo are the same thing?

decodeddiesel 03-26-2002 03:09 PM

As far as I know yes they are the same radiator with a snazzy paint job.

superart 03-26-2002 03:37 PM

darn, i hate when companies do that. If they are the same thing, why give them different names?

sunblade 03-26-2002 04:05 PM

Is the metallic paint similar to a new car type metalic? If it is, that's pretty impressive, and I'd prolly end up staring at it for 3 hours before installing it :D

Adam 03-27-2002 02:58 AM

Function or style, u pick

I thought the idea of watercooling was to get better performance. I don't understand the idea of going backwards by painting a radiator with a non heat conducting material, this seems counter productive. What we should be looking into is coating radiators with thermal dispersant material. It allows the heat to be pulled from the metal faster. It's used a lot on engine cylinders and radiators to improve heat transfer. painting may increase temp only a few degrees but this may cool an extra few degrees, making the difference of more than a few degrees...i gotta look into it some more.....search for thermal dispersant and do some reading. tell me what u think

Brad 03-27-2002 03:32 AM

if the coating is really thin I can't see it mattering much, but this is something done for looks, not performance

sunblade 03-27-2002 11:40 AM

I think this rad is aimed at people with a giant window in the side of their case. The standard black color of the BI-X doesn't look that shabby either.

decodeddiesel 03-27-2002 01:26 PM

I like the Chrome ones the best, but the Black BIs and the new colors look great!!
