well first attempt at my own air trap...be kinda first time ive done this...already have plans for the real one as this is just a prototype.....

Haddy - it is best to put one of the barbs in the middle and one on an end. If they're on either end, it will sound like a waterfall unless the airtrap is completely full.

I like your design. I'm currently using a DuBro tank with a T below it and it does a poor job of trapping air. The water flow is fast enough that it just pushes the bubbles right through.

Where did you get the material for your trap? I've been looking around for clear plexi tube locally and haven't found anything yet.

How will you fill the system?

You should be able to find this stuff locally with the right approach. It is called hollow acrylic rod, and if you look up "Glass" in the yellow pages and call around you will probably find someone who can supply you with some. You can also probably get them to cut it for you as well.

How'd you drill the holes Haddy? Acrylic isn't the easiest thing to drill into. Also any thoughts on how to go about tapping threads into the tube? That would be a much cleaner solution...

well shaddy i got most of the stuff @ home depot (barbs, silicon, acrylic tops which are made outta a sheet of acrylic) and i got the tube from petsmart, its just a gravel cleaner that i cut the ends off of and glued some tops on.....also ill just fill it like u would normaly fill an inline system..i just wont have to bleed it

ph i drilled it with a a drill w/ a 1/2 drill bit the i had to take a dremel and make the hole a lil bit wider (barbs wouldnt go in)..the only problem i had jus using the drill is i couldnt stop it in time before it hit the other side after i got threw the first hole....next time im gona use ea drill press....

btw usplastics is where i plan on gettin all the stuff for my next adventure with this...i dont recommend using this silicon stuff...havent had a chance to test it with a pump, just been filllin it in the sink and cing what happens and it wuz leakin (thats y theres so much silicon on some spots and not so much on others) so i should begettin my pump soon..lol im praying it just doesnt blow apart on me...i plan on using some arcylic weld #3 on the next project...http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthrea...&threadid=6791 theres where i asked linear about it

Im just saying that the air trap will have to be pretty full to work well with how you designed it. And if it traps enough air, the water level will lower and you'll have to add some in order to not have a waterfall sound. I just htink it would have been more effective with one barb all the way on the bottom and the other just an inch or two above.

guess i shoulda looked closer, they have their barbs like u said to havem....good to know for the next go around

I would have the barb lower to make things easier, but it can still be done your way w/out much prob so don't worry abotu it ;)

like i said this is just a proto...i probably wont ever use this one in my system cause i dont trust glue i can pull of with my fingers with no force at all (guess it doesnt like to stick to the acrylic to well)...thats y i made this lil thing first, so i could post here and c what u guys think before i waste alot of money...i should be ordering my stuff for the real deal here soon...

If you want recommended drill sizes for the fittings (these are based on them being tapped with a tap after drilling), look here. In general, the site has a lot of useful tidbits of info ;)

yea i gotta figure out how to tap this plastic

I tap my acrylic top just the same way I do a metal top. Seems to work just fine, but the material will need to be at least 1/8" thick to get enough threads in there.

Are fittings National coarse or National Fine? I will go get the tap and acrylic to finish this up over the weekend if I can tap it.

The acrylic tube I have is 1/8" thick, but since it is a tube I guess it has somewhat more threads than it would otherwise. I was planning on putting some nylon barbs in it so I can use some sort of good glue to seal everything.

Wow, that looks similar to mine... except i put the barbs on each end (Duh) and you do get a waterfall sound (drives me nutz). So i just keep it filled completely to the top, which deprives the water of O2 and keeps things from growing in my straight distilled water setup. there is just enough air in mine to make a shower of bubbles flow down into the tap, but not far enough to get air into the lines :p
