Claiming that Wetter will void warranty
 

The only reason that some shops may want to void your warranty because of using Wetter could stem from the usage of sillicates in most all cooling system additives (and most antifreeze).

Silicates are a close relative of sand (go figure) and whilst they are great for protecting metals in the cooling system from corrosion (and pulling double duty in sandcastles), they get used up and can come out of solution over time and can cause wear on things like pumps.

This may very well happen in your system if you are using a additive that contains silicates, but I have no confirmation that water wetter uses this, seeing that there are other things that can achieve the same results. Some that are used in conjunction with silicates, are phosphates and borates, along with nitrates, nitrites, "organic acids", moly and other lubricants, and sometimes surface tension reducers (which may just be a by-product of the overall mix).

It may seem that we have a company or two that are making a blanket assumption based on not alot or homework in the area, since not a single representative has ever said why usage will void your warranty.

All of this begs a question: If we cant use wetter to battle corrosion, then WTF do they thinik we should use? Antifreeze? It uses the same components!

Maybe we should just forego all corrosin protection? I mean, chunks of corroded aluminum cant be less abrasive than micron sized particles of sillicates. Not to mention the algi floating around.

Is wear even a factor? Only you guys who have been running Wetter and/or Antifreeze can be the judges of that.....

I am going to start looking for a SCA (Supplimental Cooling Additive) that is more up to the job of cooling computers. That way we can get rid of any Glycols and get better heat transfer.

silicate (SiO4) tends to polymerize and then precipitate out as SiO2 (aq) as pH is raised. Water wetter says right on the bottle it is alkaline in pH, so any SiO4 would precipitate out as a white solid in the bottle. If the concentrations are too low for silicate to precipitate out in the concentrated, high pH bottle then it certainly won't happen after you dilute it (lower concentration and pH). If it doesn't precipitate (and crystalize which I have a doubt about as well in the presence of anions like phosphate) then it won't damage pumps any more than any other ion in solution would (not at all).

Sounds like bs that someone came up with to not honor warranties to me.

Remember, that most of us, if not all of us, use POND pumps to pump the water. Yeah, they have a filter to make sure rocks don't go in the pump. But they are designed to be hit with smaller particles such as sand, alge, fish poo, whatever.

Obviously, you can't just put the pump in a sand box, and have it work... but when all you have is some small grains of sand going through the pump, its no big deal.

There is no way that WaterWetter would form a percipitate when you just mix it with distilled in a copper/aluminum environment. And even if it did... the amout of percipitate would be so negligable, that it wouldn't interfear with the impellar or pump houseing at all.

The guys at OCH tell us that WaterWetter voids warrenties... yet they sell it, and one of the main guys uses it... :drool:

At a 2oz water wetter per gallon of water concentration, i dont see how it could screw up a pump.:shrug:

OCH states that water wetter was built for 1/4 mile drag racing...hmmm..pep boys sells it for $5 for the big bottle here...theer isn't a damn thing at pep boys that i would buy for any type of 1/4 mile drag racing....

i used to drag race semi-pro in the NHRA ranks since I was 18 years old..my family is a very large auto sport family..from stock car, to indy, and even drag racing...why do you care?

water wetter in your every day car for the summer is fine...water wetter couldn't cool the piss i take after a 1/4 mile race...that is why 90% of auto racers use pure water and maybe a lil castrol pro street or top fuel h2o additive...very few places sell this stuff, and when they do..umm..lets just say you can get a complete h2o kit for about the same price...no lil jugs of it..usually 55 gallon barrels...

i have used water wetter on my celeron 466 @ 900 system using copper block, aluminum oil cooler, steel resevoir...needless to say, i have changed the water maybe 3 times since 2000....every now and then i may add a lil water or water wetter to the system...but everything is functioning just as well as the day i put it all together...old danner pump from pet smart is still tickin' away just fine...my temps are still the same from day one...the system has prolly been off for no more then a weeks time in over 2 years...

so yes, i would say that claim is major BS

He also says that water wetter is highly acidic but the redline site http://www.redlineoil.com/redlineoil/wwti.htm syas that it has a pH of 8.6 (alkaline) it also lubricates pumps so wear is less of a factor.

they sell bilge pumps, which are obviously designed for short periods of use in a boat.

what does sea water have it it? just about everything.
what does a normal water cooling setup have? water + small amounts of ion's in the water + water wetter

it's just as easy way to void the warrenty on something they know isn't going to last

Their pumps are total shit and they blame the waterwetter (which they sell) for the pump going bad. Thats like if Mazda told me that my motor died because I used the synthetic oil that they sold me, total bullshit.

OCH is a joke. I laugh everytime I read someone claim that their OCH watercooling setup kicks ass. :D

Well, I'm here to tell ya that I have the res/pump, and so far I'm liking it. No issues at all yet. It runs 24/7 and I mixed my water with antifreeze. I know that its life expectancy is not better than an eheim, and some others, but IMO eheims dont look good in a system exposed IMO, so if I ever got one, I'd find a way to hide it in my system or do something to it to make it look nicer in my system.

BTW, has anyone opened up one of those cpufx/och res/pump enclosures and found the pump model ? I'd like to know what's in there without having to drain my system since I just finished putting it back together.
