mouting springs on maze3

Do you guys completly compress your springs on your block? Im getting 40c at idle. I would try to compress more but I'm afraid of cracking the core.

Brad 05-15-2002 02:47 AM

if you keep the block level, and keep equal pressure on each spring it's virtually impossible to damage the core, the only thing the core can do then is go straight through the back of the board, but then I've never seen that happen ;)

DigitalChaos 05-15-2002 07:27 AM

i compress mine all the way

UpAllNight 05-15-2002 09:11 AM

i have mine compressed all the way to

but i was VERY careful making sure my block was even measurements on all 4 corners

DigitalChaos 05-15-2002 09:56 AM

i wasnt carefull =) i just used a shim

UpAllNight 05-15-2002 10:53 AM

i have never used a shim....i think i saw a thread talking about GIRLS use shims...:D

DigitalChaos 05-15-2002 11:10 AM

lol... shims are good.. you can be sloppy and do stuff when you can barely see that you are so tired and still not break stuff

webmedic 05-15-2002 11:47 AM

I have to agree. I don't care what others say. I have had many cpu's and I'm always testing my watercooling stuff. My blocks are on and off all the time. My blocks on, then off, then the maze go's on to check between the two. Back and forth like this all the time. I've cracked more than enough cpu's to know that if I'm a sissy I'm also not a sissy out 150$ bucks for my athlon xp. If it happens just once or twice it adds up. The shim is only 10-15$ or so and saves me much in the end.

Brad 05-16-2002 02:13 AM

shims are for girls

morphling1 05-16-2002 04:04 AM

I don't use springs at all, just steel bolts and winged nuts, and of course shim, I also take a lot of block on and off, and I don't wanna waste time being too careful :D

jag_e_fattig 05-16-2002 04:57 AM

i've only taken my alpha pal8045 off once, so i don't feel that a shim is necessary for me..

webmedic 05-16-2002 07:19 AM

No you are right the only reason I use the shims is because I do allot of changing around. And Brad can burn up his own cpu's, as for me the first 300-450$ that gets thrown out the door is enough. Fortunately this has not happened to me. I rma'd them but I did crush a few and decided not to take my chances.

Jim 05-17-2002 03:53 PM

What kind of shims are you guys using and where do I buy?
Jim

morphling1 05-17-2002 05:10 PM

I made it myself from 0,6 or 0,7 mm Cu sheet (I'm not really sure), little dremel action,

Haddy 05-17-2002 08:00 PM

here we go....another shim haiting thread....fun.....

Triton 05-17-2002 08:19 PM

shimmy shimmy coco puff!

Shimless and I'm proud.

Jim 05-17-2002 09:12 PM

Jim needs to know where he can buy a shim?

Really, heck I never even saw one.
Jim

Cyco-Dude 05-17-2002 09:49 PM

link to Tweakmonster aluminum shims. resellers listed @ bottom of page.

FRAGN'STIEN 05-17-2002 09:59 PM

I've heard horror stories about "copper shims" but I have one I used on all my heatsinks without a problem. Maybe I should put it on with my block and go to town on my springs:evilaugh:

Haddy 05-17-2002 10:21 PM

use the non conductive ones.....works wonders

Ebonyks 05-18-2002 12:03 AM

I just plan to use the old mounting equiptment from my swiftech MC462a

FRAGN'STIEN 05-18-2002 12:42 AM

Well I put on my shim and compressed the springs all the way down and my temps are still high:mad: 39c at idle. If i turn my fans to 12v it makes no difference. I'm not totally unhappy with my temps but with my humble overclock it should be cooler. It's still cooler than any heatsink I've ever used. I think I need a bigger pump and rad, oh and think the smell of the water wetter is giving me brain damage:drool:

WebMasta33 05-18-2002 01:00 AM

<-- uses a conductive shim... loves it...

*grabs his pleated skirt*

*does a curtsy*

*licks her lolly pop*

There you happy?! Shims are for girls....

Ebonyks 05-18-2002 01:04 AM

Hell, i used to use a conductive shim, but IMO the risk is too great. Beides, nylon sux0rz
