Working with Lexan.

What dremal bit should I use to cut this stuff?

Will it get hot and melt at all?

Its for a window...

Cya ;)

Cyco-Dude 05-26-2002 02:21 PM

it will melt / warp if the cutting wheel is moving too fast or if you arent cutting the material fast enough. set the speed of the tool to low, and take breaks to allow the lexan to cool down.
it would be wise to play around with a scrap piece befor doing the actual window.

Ya good Idea.

Well I cut my window.

I used this bit... Here

It works GREAT.

But be very careful, those chunks of lexan that it spits out, are HOT!!

Cieprus 05-26-2002 05:51 PM

Can I use Epoxy to bond the lexan to the side of my case?

Will regular epoxy bond the lexan to the metal?

Thanks

Cyco-Dude 05-26-2002 07:15 PM

try some velco...also, you might try putting some trim around the edge of the hole to make it look spiffy (chrome car door trim would work; available @ most auto-parts stores)

er...check your link there bro :p did you use a cut-off wheel?? or like a router bit?

pHaestus 05-26-2002 08:21 PM

My windows are affixed with Plumber's Goop (marine goop to be exact) :)

Ya I have the trim, but its a pain cause it kinks around corners.

Ok I fixed the link

Ahh good idea.

I need to try that stuff, I hear its great.

Cieprus 05-26-2002 10:36 PM

Great, Im in a bind.

The window border i got kinks around small bends.

bummer...

pHaestus 05-26-2002 10:40 PM

The lexan I used was VERY thin (got in a bit of a bind on my top window and didn't want to hack up the frame). Your mileage may vary using goop to hold heavy lexan in place.

FRAGN'STIEN 05-26-2002 10:44 PM

I used velcro on my Aopen because the lexan scraches real easy. That if you buy a big roll of the velcro you can just change out the window when it gets too ugly.

Cieprus 05-26-2002 10:50 PM

Ya, I still dont know what to do for a border.

pHaestus 05-26-2002 10:56 PM

No borders on my windows; just flush mounted windows. The best looking way for aluminum cases IMO

Auto trim: black,gold,chrome.

pHaestus 05-26-2002 11:12 PM

Yea the black window trim I have used before on blowholes and I could make a 60mm circle with no kinking:

Ah yes. Thats what I use for fan trim only a little thinner.

pHaestus 05-26-2002 11:27 PM

If you are wondering you can get it at Pepboys and I think it was like $2-3 for a lot of it.

SWEET! There just down the street!!

pHaestus 05-26-2002 11:33 PM

Yea if you can't find it then ask for window trim kit. As mentioned they have black, chrome, gold, and I want to say maybe even another color or two and in different thicknesses. They also have "U shaped" (what I used on fans) that goes over both sides of the case door, and "L shaped" that has adhesive for one side and so your window can be mounted flush on the back. I haven't used it for windows so I dunno which is best.

Cieprus 05-26-2002 11:39 PM

Ya, I hope there open tommarow, holiday and all.

Cieprus 05-27-2002 11:42 AM

Ok I got the black L-Shaped edging.

It works pretty good, except it was short and I needed pieces.

My windows all done!!!

Now I need a light...

What can I use from around the house?

X-Mas lights would be neat! :p

What is a lexan window? I found this site where you can order a case and if you pay an extra 30 bucks you can upgrade the windows to lexan windows. Is it worth it?
