AAAck Windows install!!
I keep trying to install windows and it just keeps on freezing up on me... It seems to happen most when I move the mouse, so I tried unplugging it. I got win2k installed but then it wouldn't boot up, tried messing with bios a little, and got nothing. it would start a little in safe mode, but then in a few seconds it'd freeze up and make all these weird colors. So now I'm trying win98, and it keeps on freezing up during the install... most of my stuff is still old stuff that worked before, but I have this motherboard i think might be crap. It's a Tyan Trinity with i845 chipset. Can anyone help me out here on what could be the problem? If it is the mobo, what's a good p4 board to get? I saw the soyo dragon4 at pcnut it looks pretty sweet but it costs so much, anyone ever used it?

ya know I had a similar problem, but it was with a computer I had just built. I was a dumbass and set my memory too high, I forget what its called. 0_o guess I'm a little too high to be explaining this right now. uhmm...just try setting your memory to 133 or 166 or whatever you're memory runs at...if that doesn't fix it mess around with your FSB uhmmm....yeah if that doesn't work get a new mobo. Can't help you with p4 mobos though as I avoid p4 like the plague. Sorry if I don't make any sense.

Try removing all NON essentail components from your system. Start with network adapters, sound cards, etc. till you only have video, HDD, CPU, and RAM. That helps eliminate any conflicts with the BIOS and other critical components. If you still cant install then try swapping out the other componets with other "known" working units to isolate the problem. ALSO in the BIOS use the FACTORY DEFAULTS if you haven't already. YOu can always go back and kick up the systems speed in the BIOS after you get it working. One last thing, check your power supply with a meter and make sure that you are getting correct voltages out of the 12V and the 5V sides. YOu should be getting between 11.5 - 12.5 out of the 12V and 4.5 - 5.5 out of the 12V line.
Let me know if you still cant get that thing to work and I will do my best to help you out. Good luck |
4.5 is a bit too low, 4.75 is much more accurate.
if your win98 was really stable and win2k is suddenly really bad, it'd appear to be a system configuration issue, something win2k doesn't like |
Turns out my video card was so old and crappy that it wouldn't even work with my newer stuff. I just got me a geforce4, slipped it in there and everything works fine. I am now an official nVidia fan.
