fish?

yes this seemed like the appropriate area of the forums to be posting this in. i had an idea just now to put fish in the reservoir. you know....just like a gold fish or 2. of course, the reservoir would have to be see-through and possibly putting a metal mesh over the inlet and out of the reservoir so the fish dont go through the system. also, you couldnt use your water-wetter or antifreeze, just the usual aquarium chemicals. gotta keep the fishies alive right? heaven forbid the day we start water-cooling gold fish through our comps....

well....just a thought. i might do this when i start building the rig.

bigben2k 06-07-2002 04:16 PM

You could but...

Your flow rate will reach at least 50 gph, and in a little tank/res, that fish wouldn't be able to keep up: it'd be tossed around like a hamster in a wheel at 5'000 rpm...

Also, the water temp will reach about 30C. Some fish like it, some don't, but it isn't conducive to holding oxygen: the fish will suffocate. You could add air bubbles, but that could be complicated.

Not impossible... but not easy.

tim-may 06-07-2002 04:46 PM

interesting.....

well....lets see.....

lets assume we have a BIG reservoir ( 7" X 7" X7" ) so...if we make it out of.....either lexan or acrylic, the we could take a piece of whatever it is and make a kind of wall so that the fish have a place to chill (haha pun intended). now i remember having a bunch of gold fish a long agoand i had some little air bubbler thing, for lack of a better way to describe it, it did exactly what is needed. it put air in the water for the fish. i doubt the temp was at 30 C though.

hmmm....now what kind of fish like it at 30C?:)

I would reccomend goldfish they are great, because unlike many tropical fish they can usually survive in "colder" water. I used to have lots of goldfish in a tank at room temperture and they did fine. I think the idea is definitely possible its just the flow and current of the water that might not be good for them. Also if you want to get some air in the res just buy a cheap air pump from a pet store.

DarkEdge 06-18-2002 08:00 AM

Bad idea. First of all I hate goldfish. I think there ****ing filthy...and thats the problem.

Waste. Any fish produces waste, and then theres the fish food to. You want that in your system.

I would instead make a tank thats split down the middle. keep the fish in the front half and the actually res in the back half.

WebMasta33 06-18-2002 12:34 PM

Let's put it this way...

You'd end up with a fish shit buildup in your system... not a good idea :p

bikr 06-20-2002 06:47 PM

don't count it out..

Everyone will feel really bad when some scientist somewhere realized that fish turds absorb heat , and someday all water coolers will have fish so that the turds carry heat from the cpu faster.. and you'll all be sorry.. haha.. ok so maybe not but it was wide open..

FRAGN'STIEN 06-20-2002 11:27 PM

Put those tiny little sucker fish in there then they would stick to the sides and not be tossed around, also they would eat all the scunge off your system (maybe even their own turds)  :D

tim-may 06-20-2002 11:50 PM

wow popular thread today

im liking a few of the ideas so far, except for using fish shit as a thermal conductor....

but i think a separate tank for them is the way to go, along with getting a sucker fish.

bigben2k 06-21-2002 09:01 AM

The other thing I just remembered is that the water temp will fluctuate, as the system is turned on and off: few fish can handle that.

BaconGrease 06-21-2002 01:32 PM

The sucker fish idea is an absolute classic!
Just to continue in that vein you could through in some big snails.

bikr 06-21-2002 02:01 PM

Fish

Just for the record the fish turd idea wasn't actually an idea , just saying that you'd be sorry if that did ever happen haha.. sorry , ok I'll shut up now..

tim-may 06-21-2002 03:13 PM

hahaha
but would the gold fish, sucker fish, and snails all play nicely?

kibbler 06-22-2002 01:36 AM

Off topic (and a strange one at that) bacongrease, what is your avatar? Where's it from? I could probably sit and stare at it for hours...

BaconGrease 06-22-2002 10:55 AM

I can't take credit for it.
A friend of mine at another site used it and I had the same problem...couldn't stop staring at them.
Figured I'd pass on the love.
Can't remember where it comes from originally though.

FRAGN'STIEN 06-22-2002 01:05 PM

Ok I didn't know this was a serious thread. My suckerfish idea was, well, a random thought but hey if it works cool, more power to you. Try it and see and keep us posted tim-may

tim-may 06-23-2002 01:17 AM

this wasnt supposed to be serious. it just started to seems like a good idea after i read over everyones posts.

i was trying to think of what i would name the fish though....

LOL any suggestions? i have a few good ones so far.

for the sucker fish:
Squeegee

the gold fish:
Petey
Yum-Yum
Fluffy (my friend alan actually gave me this one)
and Cat Food

Aridmoose 06-23-2002 02:53 AM

i have had countless goldfish... named them all Bob... that's what they end up doing after a while... sad.

kibbler 06-23-2002 03:02 AM

off topic again, but bacongrease, all I can say is that was a quick right click-save as
