socket 478 maze3 mounting
 

the hardware dangerden supplied is pretty crappy and not stable enough for the vinyl/pvc hosed i got. anybody have a suggestion to mount it better? dangerden's installation page is always down for me, how bout yous guys?

I think that mounting P4 requires much larger clamping force, so if the mounting springs are the same as with amd version, that means they are way too soft. I would just use just steel bolts and wing nuts, without springs (I'm using this with amd)because you practicaly can't damage P4 and its heatspreader, and tighten till the block is firmly mounted on cpu.

would some nylon washers be sufficient in keeping the screws from shorting the mobo?

Yes no problem, I've got M4 bolts with 4mm ID rubber (1mm thick) washers, on each side of the mobo and M4 nuts to hold bolts in place on the mobo.

just try tightening the screws down more, I'm guessing they just aren't screwed down enough

naw, those nylon screws are pieces of crap, if i wouldve tightened any further, it wouldve stripped them

dunno about that, just try making them tighter anyway and see what happens, it doesn't sound as if you are going to use them anyway

i did use them, the prob was they werent stable enough for me to bend that mack daddy pvc tubing i have

Nylon bolts suck under pressure. You can crank them down tight but eventually the threads start to give. Then you have to be patient and rethread them to get them off.

They also melt. When my maze 3 failed (See my post) they just fell off. I don't know how my block was still sitting there.

Thanks ppl. I just ordered a Maze3-1 for my first h2o setup after I got fed up with my girlfriend telling me to shut down my relatively loud PC at bedtime. Now I have to think about modding the darned thing before I even recieved it (she gets annoyed with projects constantly cluttering our apartment too ;-)

I understand why metal bolts are prefered, but I'm leary of going without some sort of spring compression. Without a spring, the mount will likely loosen quickly from creep in the mobo & bolts (not to mention further tightening to compensate for creep could cause yielding or cracks). To keep things more reliable, I was thinking about finding a stiffer spring at a hardware store to go with metal bolts. What do you guys think about this?

I have been putting off h2o until now because I didn't like the idea of having to constantly check up on things, so any help here would be appreciated.

Just make sure that you respect the AMD clamping pressure specs. I'd go with the springs, metal bolts, and some loc-tite.

Oh, and make sure you use a shim!!!

the Maze 3 comes with mounting hardware (including springs). all you need to do is replace the nylon threaded rods with steel bolts! thats what i did; works fine. i believe the size they use is 6x32....or 8x32. go to Ace Hardware and test those two sizes (unsing one of the nylon nuts from the M3 mounting hardware), one of them will work.

The original topic was about mounting maze3 on P4, and here is no problem with using just nuts without spring (it won't come loose), also I believe that clamping preasure for P4 is around 70pounds for which you would need a lot stiffer springs.
But for amd, yeah springs + shim for protection is the way to go, steel bolts and nuts of course too.
