Made a shroud

Finally made a shroud. It has brought improvement. Now mysystem runs 3C above idle temps at full load overclocked.
Here's a pic, what do you think?

gmat 06-20-2002 05:00 PM

1 - attach it to the front of a bicycle
2 - wire it to a dynamo
3 - add some winglets on the rear
4 - whoooooooooosh

This thing looks like the end of a wind tunnel... (a bit gettho though).
Hehe. Need sleep.

jtroutma 06-20-2002 05:21 PM

Needs to be bigger :D

What size fans are those? 92mm or 80mm? Why not try for 4 or even 6 120mm? Just a suggestion.... :)

Honestly, looks nice. Maybe find a way to loose the duct tape but that is just me.

BTW, if you set the shroud down, does it hover? :)

gone_fishin 06-20-2002 05:52 PM

Three of the fans are quiet case fans 2200 rpm and one is a 5000 rpm thermaltake. I can pull the plug on the thermaltake for more peace and quiet, it accounts for 75% of the noise.

chazz469 06-20-2002 06:03 PM

Not bad. What's it made out of? Plastic? Seems like you could fit a couple more fans on there though....

Lothar5150 06-21-2002 12:57 AM

What do you think of this one?:D

That is really nice:cool:
Makes my contraption look like....a contraption:D

Lothar5150 06-21-2002 02:05 AM

Your "contraption" probably cools pretty well:D That's a lot of fans.

chazz469 06-21-2002 02:41 AM

Lothar's is pretty. But, gone_fishin', with a little cosmetic artistry yours could look pretty shit-hot too. And be much more effective (i.e. more fans). If you homogenized your fan collection, and did a little painteing, what you have would look pretty good.

morphling1 06-21-2002 06:17 AM

Wow, Lothar5150, that looks great, what's that shroud made of ? And from which car is that radiator?
gone_fishin, looks a little ghetto, but it should perform great, you could make shroud from Cu and solder it to rad. ,but that just takes a lot of work. milling blocks is much more fun right. :D

bigben2k 06-21-2002 09:33 AM

Gone_fishin's looks like it was made out of either cardboard, or plastic.

Lothar's looks like a "lucky find". I'm guessing that it's sealed with something, maybe silicone. Looks nice, and works great.

Gone_fishin's will be quieter though, because it is always quieter to run multiple small fans, than it is to run a single large fan (given the same cfm).

I'm a proponent of the do-it-yourself-out-of-fiberglass, but all my tools and supplies are in storage right now:cry:

Its not at lucky find. Its the master for a mass production mold;)

Sealed?

Yes it is. With an 1.5 inch between the fan and face of the heater core;)

Gnozo 06-21-2002 03:53 PM

gone_fishin: Looks nice, maybe need the final touch, but it's nice...

Lothar5150: Looks also extremely nice....

morphling1 06-21-2002 05:09 PM

Hey Lothar5150, again from which car is that rad.

Sorry I missed that.:) It's from a 1986 Chevette

Nice guess but it's made of heavy gauge aluminum I use in construction for trim finishing exterior soffit systems. If I make another I will take more time, use a break and ditch the duct tape, but I decided to get it done quickly.:)
I may try dual 120mm fans on another just to see the difference in sound and performance. It is extremely quiet with only the three case speed fans running and it is doing a good job.

Hey, I just pulled the SAME core from a chevette in the scrap yard the other day! THough mine isn't all shined up, I should have cleaned it with HCL, but who has time... Takes about a good 10-15min of hammering away at the air intake box on the inside of the hood on the firewall...GOtta be careful not to smash the core itself, but it cost me $10 and works perfectly. Oh, one more good tip, man talks about the MOTHERLAND of FREE tubing clips and shit, they don't even care if you take them. I got like 14 clamps for nothing... The scrapyard IS where it's at for water cooling supplies!

Now I just need to drill some holes to mount my new homemade block I've been working on... ZIFF mounting clips are the DEVIL!!!

gone_fishin 06-24-2002 04:20 PM

Sounds good:)
I paid $19 plus shipping for a total of $26 new. You probably want to run some radiator flush through yours to clean out all the engine coolant crud.

V12|V12 06-24-2002 04:29 PM

Yeah, I ran hot water and some cleaner through it for a about 10min until all the out going water was clear and glass... Man I'm a MORON! I was going to get the Chevette core in the first place, but then I decided on the Festiva one, cause it wasn't as thick, which I thought wouldn't fit...turns out, the Chev' core fits PERFECTLY! Also, the festiva core's airflowage was Shitty, even with a shroud and 105CFM 120mm! Chevette cores are the way to go for space, flow and CHEAP!

They are about 166mm x 170mm x 55mm

ANyone know where to get aluminum brazing wire? I found some Silver brazing wire from Homedepot for pretty cheaP!

dcrainman 06-24-2002 05:52 PM

gone fishing where did you get your radiator?

ikonis 06-24-2002 11:04 PM

I have the exact same heatercore that Lothar has....
problem is...

i need to make a shroud for a rotron fan....

GenGoku 06-24-2002 11:46 PM

if we dont have the tools to make a nice looking shroud like the two shown, is there a place that sells these that fit a BIX Evo for two 120mm fans?
