Quiet Pump
Any suggestions for a quiet pump, don't care about cost. Need higher GPH (250+).

I would suggest the Danner Mag Drive Model 5 or 7. I am running the model 5 right now and I can't hear it over the 120mm fan on the radiator. Its a greaty pump!

Haven't got mine yet, but I've always heard that the Ehiem pumps were the quietest you could get. Though you will pay extra for it.

Eheim are the way to go for reliability and silence. Hydor are performing OK too and are less expensive (not much...).

How much flow would you recommend? I'm running an AXIA 1.33g T-bird @ 1650 with DD Maze 2.1 w 1/2", Cube type AC cooler (like the DD Cube or BE Aquacoil) and a Danner Mag-Drive 2 (250gph).
I could trade up to a 350 or 500 for cheap at the local hydroponics store, is it worth it??? Does the bigger pump heat the water??? The trend has started to seem towards bigger, I was always told 250-350 was max, now everyone upsizing. How loud compared to 250??? P.S. I do not use a peltier and don't plan to. Reliability important as system almost never shuts off |
Cubes will kill your flowrate. They limit you to 3/8 inch pipeing and have tons of turns. Aim for very high flowrate on paper so that you have the pressure to push enough water through.

this is my own thread, oh well...... Anyone have anything against the hydrothruster 500?
|
Sorry David, hands down best pumps for reliability and quitness are the eheim units. I just think the eheims are over-priced in Canada (135.00 for a #1250) but you can get one from Danger Den for $65.00 (flows 320gph). They rarely leak (unlike the Mag-Drive I run, which I siliconed). Sorry I raped your thread. :)
P.S. I don't know anything about the hydrothruster 500, but the current debate I have is if there's any advantage to good pumps over 250gph. I still haven't heard anyone saying they cool better with the bigger unit in a standard setup, but if you get it, tell me how it works for ya. |
Hey if you wanna dead quiet pump, check out the Quiet One, by Rainbow Systems. rated at 1240gph, it should be a stormer. You can buy it at www.overclock-watercool.com

Beware though, i bought quite a powerful pump to find out it heats up quite a lot :p
Make sure you're removing that pump heat as well... Even if it's inline it's *very* hot at touch after a few hours. My pump is 1200LPH but i think 600LPH would be fair enough. |
