Anyone know a good replacement for......

A Volcano 7+ fan? its a 70X70X25 fan and its 49cfm @47da!! its a little loud. Im looking for a good replacement with maybe less noise and better airflow? Any suggestions?

YOu could always look for a shroud that will convert a 92mm fan to 60mm. Or a 120mm shroud to 80mm. Then get yerself a good large CFM fan rated at only 35dbs and your set.

Worked for me on a smaller scale.

GF kept compaining that her new 1Ghz Duron was "too noisy, I can't hear the TV." So I bought a Vantec 80mm Stealth fan and an 80mm to 60mm shroud and she stoped complaining.

But this is a 70x70x25 mm fan, is there such a conversion to place a 92 or 120mm on it somehow? by the looks of the volcano 7+, see pic below , im not sure if there can be a conversion, what do you think?

Well the shroud doesnt have to be 70 x 70, It could only be 60 x 60 and still perform well. If you want the volume of air at a low noise rating, go with a 120mm fan with a shroud down to 60mm.

Some fins will probably be exposed on the sides of the heatsink but when you are moving 65+ cfms vs 45cfms over that heatsink, do you really think that little bit will hurt performance much?

Just a thought.

Another way you could do it is to use an oversized shroud so it goes over the whole heatsink but you might loose some cooling because of the traped heat in the center of the heatsink. Mounting that thing would be the problem............

Where there's a will, there's a way. You have to think 3 dimensionally...

Pickup a fan adapter, and figure out how to mount it. You might have to cut off the sides of the sink, and screw the adapter right into the fins.

Sounds good, but I just have to find a convertor to put on a 120mm fan, anyone have any links that I can check out to buy one?

What I have found works well (in some cases) as a ghetto converter is to use a fan grill of appropriate size for the fan you are planning to use, but instead of placing it over the fan you place it beneath the fan. You then screw the grill into the heatsink fins. Then its just a matter of attaching the fan to that.

I'm not sure if it will work with the shroud, may be worth trying though. (cheap fix).

That definitely sounds like an interesting way, but im not sure if it would work on the shroud of the volcano 7+, i will definitely look into that conversion.

You will definately have to take the chrome trim off the sides to do the mod.

I have never had luck with a fan adapter. I tried a 60-80 adapter back when I air cooled, to eliminate the screaming 60mm Delta black label. No matter which 80mm fan I tried, the lower decibals came with at least a 5 C penalty.

Noise is bothering you huh?

heh heh heh...

Let the countdown begin.

(Let me be the first to say it...welcome to water cooling :D )

ehm, why am i getting the sense here that SOMEONE isnt using THAT FAN SILENCER that came with the cooler?
