How Do I connect Pump Directly to PSU?
I have an Eheim pump and an Enermax 431 PSU. I looked at Joe's article from the Pro Mini, but the pictures aren't very close and he doesn't explain it too well. How do you connect the Pump directly to the PSU, so it starts up whenever the computer is turned on? I know about soldering the wires. But if anyone could provide me with pictures I would greatly appreciate it. On a side note. Damn its late.

It's a F.A.Q. obviously (hint hint, Joe: why not adding such FAQs to your site ? :))
For this you need a 12v relay and some diodes, maybe with a on/off switch (to bypass the relay when you want to test run the water loop). You bring 12v power to the relay coil from a yellow PSU wire. Then you connect mains power to relay switch from PSU back plug (you can solder wires on it). Dont forget to put protection diodes on relay coil to avoid current problems when it's turned on or off. Behind the relay switch you've got mains power that's turned on or off together with your mobo. Thats it :) |
I don't think that protection diodes are needed. Most people use a 5A relay for only one pump. So there is plenty of room for a little current surge. (most pump use only 25-50W while the relay can handle 500W more!)

Talk to unaclocker,he can exsplain how to do it better than I... :)
I just soldered about 12 inches of an exstension cord to the "live" and "neutrel" wire's coming from the psu's, p.c.b.,i added in a toggle switch to the "live" side, which now acts like a master power switch.I have to turn on the toggle switch before the psu will power up. I plugged the waterpump into the ex. cord and it starts every time the psu is powereded up.i soldered it wrong the first time and it was always on,thus the toggle switch.i dont know if this helps at all but it can be done! be careful too. http://content.communities.msn.com/_...BBA/Jam020.jpg |
