Whoa, hang on I've just had another look at the piccies and noticed the scale/size of the thing.
Just noticed the two holes further down one side - inlet/outlet? Your looking to run it inline on a water setup? Do I win a prize? |

Yes, I run it with an inline pump. Water goes from pump > radiator > block > tank. The holes you see are threaded for 3/8 barbs, 1/4" NPT. The tank is quite a bit more effective than I thought it would be, especially with a 118 watt peltier. The entire tank gets cooled because it is copper and a great deal of surface area is exposed to the water. According to my calculations, the water in the tank is replaced about every 20 seconds so the water has a bit of time to chill before moving on. I am going to have to insulate the tank, on very humid days it gets a small amount of condensation. Using thermistor, getting about a 7-10F difference in water temp. coming in and going out. I have done similar experiments with chill tanks and also inline chill blocks to charge the water passing thru with even two peltiers.
Whilst in a small loop without running thru the cpu as a test I could get my water temp as low as 8degc.However when run in a full circuit thru the cpu block the system does not yield any fantastic results.The effect is soon lost over the distance of the tubing and fighting the hot water created from the chip. I did all this because I was reluctant to mount my peltier over the chip. In the end I decided to give the peltier a go over the chip with my cold block etc. My peltier is well mounted with s\s screws between the block and cold plate.I'm only running a 72w peltier cooling a pIII 1gig @ around 1200 but the temps are way better than before.Idle is around 6degc and max load 23 degc. So after all the effort really the most simple and effective way was mounting the peltier over the chip which is very easy to do. I'm not trying to dent your ability in taking on a challenge,but I thought I would pass on some of my previous experience of doing the same. cheers stevo ;) |
I agree with you stevo. My strategy was a bit different in that I really do not want to be bothered with the hassle and the condensation risk of a peltier to chip setup. I have just heard way too many horror stories about peltiers that people thought were perfectly insulated, but still produced condensation and ruined mobos and cpu's. I also acknowledge that there are many who have condensation proof peltier setups that work well.
I think if I was running a P3 and not Athlon, I might be inclined to setup my peltiers like yours as the cpu wattage is much lower. My next step in cooling my system is to build a miniature air conditioner with my other pelt., hoping to bring case temps. and all temps. down further. My ultimate goal is to achieve ambient temps. for my CPU without peltiers on the chip itself. |
Hey JimS, these case are conditioners are sold here in Canada at a place called AMK Services. There web address is WWW.AMKCOMPUTERS.BC.CA. You can probably make it cheaper, but maybe check there design out. If you decided to buy one, an American dollars is I think 1.65 Canadian now!

An air conditioner setup is pretty easy to make you only really need two heatsink/fans and make a peltier sandwich.Screw the two heatinks together and direct the fan cooled air to wherever you want.I looked at a few of those camper type fridges and that was all they used in principle.In fact I guess they were using low power peltiers as most only had a large sink with no fan on the hot side.

Nice setup. Just for giggles, what are you asking for these tanks? And what is included?
I'm also curious, what do you do with the hot air coming off the heatsink on the hot side of your peltier? That's a lot of heat going somewhere? Inside? Outboard? Like they say, "The Devil is usually in the details." ;) |
