A newbie project up and running....

I'm new to the whole overclocking scene, but once I started, I was hooked. After reading all of your posts, I decided to take the plunge and get a watercooling set up, just becuase you make it sound so fun. I decided on a pretty basic set up, Innovatek CPU and GeForce 4 blocks and resevoir, a Black Ice Extreme rev 2 (my case is cramped as it is) and a Eheim 1048. I've been waiting to get some 1/2 fittings, but have been running 1/2" ID tubing anyway. I'm not handy at all, but I finally fashioned a great shroud for the BIX out of aluminum siding and metal tape, and squeezed it into my case after cutting a bunch of 3.5 bays out of the chassis. I've still got tons too much air and foam in my lines, and the resevoir doesn't work for crap, but man, does this thing work.....compared to your rigs, probably no where close, but I'm still around 3-5 Degrees Celcius above ambient at idle, and only 7 or so over at load. That's so much better than my old heatsink and cooling combinations. My wife still thinks I'm going to burn the house down, and I can't say that I don't blame her....but heck, I've o'cd my 1600+ XP to 1828 without much tinkering.

Anyway, just wanted to share... I'm sure I'll have questions for all of you soon, when a tube busts and the house catches on fire....

Bottom line, it was fun, not overly hard, and great results!

:)

lol. you can through my wife on the pile.

Ha, the pile grows... you can throw my parents on there. Heck they even bought me my own little fire extinguisher in case I do.

I mean come on.. fire + water = self extinguishing fire =)

I just don't tell my wife the details, it seems to help...

My sister on the other hand knows me better:D

Cooling Good, Fire Bad

Thanks for the support--I keep explaining the whole watercooling things to friends, and they just stare at me blankly. "Why?" seems to be the most common response. I guess because it's fun.

Anyway, glad to hear that other peoples' experiences with their wives/girlfriends (or both ;)) are similar to mine.

So what other cool projects, hobbies or whatnot can I try without doing significant injury to person or property?

I get that "why" response... some people...

I'm lucky enough to have a supportive wife: "If it makes you happy, go for it!" she says. :D

Dang Nexxo... you got one of the great ones!

Mine finally got so fed up with me that she kicked me out!

Always complaining about.."I can't hear the TV over your fans"

 :)

BTW can I make a bid for your wife too? :D

pHaestus 09-16-2002 05:29 PM

You can easily sell wives on water cooling:

EHEs only. Within a short time the mating of water and electronics starts to seem agreeable.

You don't provide the wife with watercooled box as well? That explains it...

Ak those pesky Deltas. Ouch.

Gravel42, welcome to this fun land full of geeks. Yes the very idea of putting water into a PC is frightening to most of my relatives as well, they have even slapped a warning sign on me saying "major nuclear hazard".
Heh.
Build a silent watercooled PC for your wife, make it pretty (plexi or lian li) and she'll be sold to it.

A 120mm fan that produces 59 dBA and only 190 CFM. OUCH!!! I thought my 150mm at 50 dBA was loud, but mine puts out a good 212CFM:D

My wife is more worried about what happens when little furry paws reach into the back of the computer and start playing with exposed 120VAC leads ... or what happens when little furry heads try to see what is behind my 120mm fans ....
