Polycarbonate is a BAD conductor of heat. You should make the upper-half of the block out of copper or aluminium. Either way i think this design will perform badly due to the lack of surface area. :rolleyes:

Would it matter if the bottom was made of copper & the top of poly?

The whole purpose is to transfer the heat into the water, not to the surrounding air.

This block is a spiral design, I believe, which should give the water quite a large surface area to transfer heat.

Yes it does matter. You are wasting a lot of surface area on the walls of the chamber by making it out of polycarbonate, (not that the block had much surface area to begin with). Surface area and water turbulence could be increased greatly by inserting a bunch of copper pins into the base plate.

I've seen these blocks used before, they work rather well, so ignore corporal hicks, he is a hick no less.... just etch some small designs like i told you to all over the inside of the chamber, that will greatly increase surface area. just make sure the whole thing is copper and the top is lexan, you need the walls and base to be copper for conductive reasons. mail me if you want any more specific help, atombomb21@tconl.com

Ignore David’s stupid remark, it’s all a question of surface area, ie. A heatsink with 20 fins will work better than a heat sink with 10 fins. As for etching small deigns on the inside of the chamber, this will do absolutely arse in terms of increasing surface area. BTW I have seen reviews for these blocks and they actually perform quite badly compared to a MAZE2 or other high performance water blocks. :D
