dual processor watercoolers, impressions plz
i've got a bud who's going to try out watercooling for his dual 1700+ setup.
i own a uniproc, and momentarily have two mediocre performing rads in series. that gives me really good results as i can passively cool my xp 2000+. his goal is to kill the noisepollution. i was recommending the dtek big momma to him. but i thk he will need 2 in optimally parallel setup. my question is this: is one big momma powerfull enough to cool 2 xp'z with let's say 1 shrouded 120mm at +/- 5V? if not, what voltage would need to be applied to have a temp result of +/- 40°C load. thx |
You ought to try running the rads in parallel. It's very likely that you'll achieve better temps.
A single Big Momma should be plenty. The only reason you'd add a second one, is for a bit more performance. In a dually, you're more than likely to hit a limit on the OC that you can get, so again, one Big Momma should do ya! The fan is critical. If you can shroud both sides of the core, and setup a push-pull fan configuration, that would be ideal, especially if you're only running the fans at 5 volts. In my next experiment, I'll be putting my own theory to work: "multiple small fans are better than a single one, for noise". I'll post results. |
well right about the parallel stuff, just ordered 2 big momma's from dtek, i will prolly buy a big ass case, and try to make something not too ghetto out of it. the situation i am in right now doesn't allow me to go for parallel. but my results are gr8 for the moment, the looks aren't though.
but let's say the two 1700's emit about 120 - 130W optimistically. is that big momma that good? |
Oh yeah.
The big momma can dissipate more than 500 Watts, with an air pressure drop of .25" H2O. You won't achieve this kind of airflow with axial fans, but you should definitely be able to cool a couple of OCd 1700+. |
This is almost an ideal situation for one of those cube cases ... YY I think they're called? You could stick the guts in one side and the massive cooling crap in the other. You could practically turn the second partition into a giant windtunnel to funnel air through your rads ....

exactly what i was thinking airspirit. only thing holding me back is the 250$ pricetag of such a case. comparing them to other cube style cases it is still dirt cheap. u would still have to duct though. u still got the psu and hdd+cdrom in the second compartment. but it would definetely work better than a fulltower. those chieftec/antecs also cost 150$ in europe so that difference is not too great.

Did I say buy one? Grab some acrylic or something and make one. The nice thing about a cube is that they are extremely easy to make. If you really want to get fancy, just form it yourself out of sheet metal and then coat the entire outside with carbon fiber. Can you say teak wood end table? You can really have fun with it, if you aren't planning on keeping to the tower (or cramped, in my opinion) case model. Just build it, put it on casters, and go for sh!t.

with 120mm fans in 5v configuration you'll definately want to run them on both sides of the rad, as they won't have very much static pressure at all - as BB2k said.
I'm sure you'll find one big heatercore and two silent 120mm's will work perfectly fine, but if not there is nothing to stop you from simply adding another heatercore in the loop |
what heatercore do you use brad. if it can cool those 2 2100MHz's, then it can cool anything. soundlevel?

I've got a heatercore from a '70-something caprice/impala that is about 2"x10"x6" and it's cooling my dual MP 2000+'s just fine. They are running between 75°-90°F. The highest I've ever seen them go is about 95°F on a hot day after playing a game for an hour or two. I have (2) 120mm Panaflow fans on rheostats and they are always running the fans at about half speed to maintain those temps. When they get up to 90°F I usually turn up the fans...
It runs at a nice low hummmm... my HD and DVD-ROM are noticibly louder than the rest of my computer. I am also seriously thinking about getting some acrylic and making a cube case... I have a full tower right now and although everything fits, it's pretty chaotic with the wires and tubes. |
My latest project is a purple button cheap full tower with a D tek heater core and a little giant in an in ground electrical box. The core is at the top with the pump at the bottom. This is working very well, and temps are a bit high 45 c due to the heat the pump is dumping in the water. But I have a D tek pump on the way which will be inline. So temps should drop. I also have a 115v 120 mm fan with a sliding light dimmer switch to quiet it down. I can say that I am very pleased with the setup. And except for the slider/dimmer switch the case looks stock. Very clean look. But soon, very soon, I will be cutting the sheet metal.

it'd be fairly hard to use a heater core on a volcano 7+ - unless there's something I don't know about ;)

heheh, small mistake of mine. then u have the same cooling that is driving my m8 nuts. he also got the volcano's.
