Poll on how to mount my mobo WTX or normal "style" Everybody Vote please!!!

ok finaly my metal is being bent. (YAY !!!!) now only one question. how to mount the motherboard. WTX style or normal style.

WTX Style= upside down
Normal style= speaks for itself :)

FYI this is a 20" server cube split down the middle and pc parts are going in one side and watercooling parts in the other. I will be keeping everybody updated on it also.

I'm running a Addtronics 8500WTX and it rocks:D :D :D
cheers

just buy a normal case and put it upside down

I'd say WTX if you will be putting it on your desk, ATX if you will be putting it on the floor. simply due to ease of access. I personally thing WTX is heaps better

id go for WTX if u can, beacuse of added space in the bottom of the case, whereas many cooling mods would be possible. i wish i had a WTX case right now, because i have added antoher 2 hdd's standing in a rack on the floor of my case, and i have ZERO clearance between it and my Tekram DC390 u2w
/me loves weird standars, that function much better!

What are the advantages?, I could see them for aircooling but what about H20?. for air it'd mean the CPU heat has a lot of rising space and is in the coolest part of the case, also the GPU would be the right way up! for natural convection to aid cooling as well.
How do you get around the I/O, ect, ports?, plugging leads in?...

*EDIT* [Doh!], You 'flip' it over rather than spin it on it's axis!. Basicly a case that opens on the right hand side(viewed from front) rather than the 'normal left'...

Well, I'm assuming that by mounting it WTX it will be on the opposite side compared to most cubes. I'd vote for this, as I kinda like the WTX style and also you sure don't see a lot of cubes with the two sides switched around.

Can also help in cooling your video card - any heat rises up from the gpu/vpu instead of sitting under the card. Although you'll be watercooling it may help a little.

I personally think it would be an advantage to having the waterblocks at the bottom of the case, so you could put all of your cooling gear lower and not have to worry about air bubbles as much.

It also puts the weight of the water nearer the bottom of the case so the thing would be less top-heavy.

True, but you would still want the reservoir to be placed high in tha case if using one, or a fill line if using closed loop system. but that nothing compared to having an top mounted pump. or a drive bay backlit resorvoir. those are really nice... :)

Mikey Boo 10-30-2002 10:05 PM

well if u went with wtx, u wood not have to worry about it leaking as much. due to that the cpus are at the bottom of the case.

ksw 10-31-2002 05:10 AM

hmm am i the only one ONLY seeing advantages with wtx? the only disadvantge would be finding a case, wtx arent as common as they ought to be :)

MadDogMe 11-05-2002 03:18 AM

No I see advantages as well, in fact I can't understand why the ATX is the popular case!, nice not to have to worry about the waterblock leaking on your £300 GPU!! :D...

How about a WTX desktop case! :p...

You know, you might be on to something...if _anything_ leaks, you just get a puddle in the bottom of the case. :D

The pump would also be working at effectively 0 head, since everything would be nearly at the same level. You could get away with a res just an inch or two higher than the rest of the system as well (though it would have to be outside the case...).

That link is bad...where else can I find out about WTX...I have never heard of this before.

bigben2k 11-22-2002 02:47 PM

It seems to be temporarily down.

In the mean time, check this one out:

I've got a cheap Alu case (Maplins £50 on offer, 'value Alu') that is held together with Pop Rivets, it's ideal for WTX modding! :D . It'll allow me to mount an Abyss rad at the bottom of the case under the CPU blowing air up over the mobo (cooling the Capacitors, ect...). do you think I should take pics and make a little article (forum only) out of it?. I'm pretty sure near on ANY Alu~riveted case can be modded like this, it's basicly just taking off and turning the back pannel upside down(plus mobo panel/tray), relocating the PSU (I feel a fanless mod coming on maybe, or combined blowhole/PSU~cooler) and extending the 240v mains plug...
