suggested pump for my setup?
I can hear my current pump hiccuping so I've decided to upgrade my petsmart pump to a nice eheim. though i thought it would be nice if i could get some feedback as to what an ideal gph would be for my setup. i am using a Maze 3, hayden rad and a large reservoir (submerged pump), all hooked up with 3/8" ID tygon. im idling around 8-9C over ambient and about 15C over on load.
There will probably be quite a bit of lift in my tower (addtronics 7896) as i plan on putting the pump above my power supply and my rad is in the front-bottom of the case where two 120 mm holes are punched. anyways i dont think i forgot anything, heres a pic of my $20 pump, no laughing  http://www.cs.unc.edu/~quirk/pump.jpg btw, interesting gph statistic for the 1250 on the eheim page |
7317 gph eh?
the 1250 would be a good pump to get, but a pump like the Laguna 3 stauary pump would kick it's ass. --Matt |
That's a typo. The Eheim is rated for 317gph, not 7317, at 0 head.
Your setup only has one flaw: the 3/8 tubing. Since you have a Maze3, you should be able to measure the effective cross section of the channels. If you compare those with the cross section area of 3/8 tubing, I'm sure you'll find that 1/2 tubing would serve you better. It's also a better fit with the 1250. As a guideline, your tubing size should be one step (1/8) larger than the cross section of the wb channel, just to make sure that the tubing doesn't become a restriction. BTW, the Eheim really isn't the best choice. It's got a good reputation for reliability, but if you look at the specs closely, it's really not much of a pump. Check out the "pump roundup" thread for more info. |

Yeah, but you want 1/2" ID tubing if at all possible. Then you can use a pump like this: http://www.evilnet.net/~koan/case_mo...t/IM001336.JPG Overkill? Certainly. But it works well for what I'm using it for. --HP |
yeah 1/2" would be better, but this was my first try and im happy with a 32C idle/39C load. anyways i guess my question boils down to do i want high flow or low flow through this setup? I've seen a lot of threads on here with this question and none of them (as far as i could tell) had a conclusion. also, I'm looking for as quiet a pump as possible.

With the Maze3, you'll see a bit of an improvement, but it might not justify the expense of another pump.
Hellion_prime's pump rocks. He's got a Little Giant 3-MDQ-SC, I use the 2-MDQ-SC. Mine's quiet:D |
