BlackIce vs. Cooling Cube
Ok...I know you guys have talked about what radiators to use and you highly recommend the BlackIce. But I'm still having trouble deciding on what to do for a rad. Here is my system configuration:
1.4Ghz soon to be OC'd MSI MoBo 512 DDR PC-2100 RAM 40 GB Hard Drive In-Win Full Tower Case 16x DVD 12x10x32x Burner Hercules Game Theatre XP Klipsche I am going to order the DangerDen Maze2 waterblock and the Eheim 1250 317GHP pump. Now...what rad. do I get...the BlackIce or the Cooling Cube (copper core) from DangerDen? Even from what I have read in previous posts I STILL can't decide  ...so please opinionise me! Other rad. I should look at are recommended also. Thanks for your help guys! |
I made my own cube, about the size of the BE cooling unit, and copied the flow paths as this does increase the cooling (see pictures at www.aquastealth.com). I think the BE Cooling Aquacube is much better than the DD Cube because it's larger and has the dual paths. From all the posts though, now I think I'm going to get a Big Momma. They fit in about the same space (although thicker) as the Black Ice, and there only 49.99 at www.caseetc.com. Plus from what everyone's saying the cool better as well (three times as thick).
Still waiting on Joe's review though. I think everyone's a little confused as well. We can't all try every one ;) |
I'll tell you folks upfront that the Big Momma does outcool the Black Ice and definitely the Cooling Cube. The Momma is a modded radiator for a car and the Cube I reckon is a refrigeration type unit.
The main consideration in the Black Ice's inception is primarily space, aesthetics, weight (shipping), mounting options; and balancing this with performance and other functionality did lead to some sacrifices in terms of its girth and performance. However, being the biased guy that I am :D, the Black Ice has a substantial headroom for the kind of cooling which you wish to implement. You can put as much as 400W of pelts to cool and you would be humming along just fine. |
I do love the Black Ice's direct bolt in approach, and I'm sure it does exceed what most require for cooling capacity, but it also costs more that the Big Momma by 20.00US. That's a substantial differance and I know I can mount a Big Momma in almost any case the Black Ice will fit with some foam and Zip Ties. Also www.overclock-watercool.com will modify the Big Momma with 1/2" fittings for 5.00 more!

Why is the Black Ice getting so much attention then if it cost more than the Big Momma and doesn't quite perform as well? Is it because of size and quality or what?
|
Well one, it is new. Two, this one is a radiator designed for PC watercooling and not just a converted rad.
Price, price is an issue we're working on, logistics, and volume come into play. But wait a while it will come down to parity. ;) An entirely new set of toolings for this rad had to be made. |
Maybe I should just get a cheap motorcycle radiator off ebay for $15 or $20. Or should I just spend the money for the big momma or black ice?
|
Well if you don't mind doing some work and want to have fun while doing it, you should be able to get one for $15 on Ebay.
Some new some used. The Momma and the Black Ice and other rads are easier choices. :D |
I think I will get a cheap one for now...and get the Black Ice II.
