What cpu is best currently?

If money was no object, would you take a P4 2800 or an Athlon 2800+?

g.l.amour 10-28-2002 07:39 AM

well, the P4 will prolly allow you a larger OC, which can be satisfying. the 2800+ will let you free the mult, which gives u endless oc pleasure of testing and retesting which is fastest.

WTF is a Z80? An 8bit processor for networking? Is that supposed to be sarcasm? I'm afraid I don't really get it.

mfpmax 10-28-2002 12:53 PM

My vote was for the Z...cause it is...DA BOMB

bigben2k 10-28-2002 02:17 PM

Zilog all the way!

I'm going to blame some other mod for that

There is only one of these two choices that is actually available for purchase...

Sadly I'm afraid I would have to nod to this statement and go with the Intel.

mfpmax 10-29-2002 11:57 PM

but you can purchase a Zilog :D

KnightElite 10-31-2002 12:09 AM

Teh Zilog goodness must be mine! Send it to me! :D.

Seriously, I voted for the 2800+. Should be a kick ass overclocker, and I can see it hitting close to 3GHz with extreme cooling.

Can O' Beans 10-31-2002 12:09 AM

I'd go for a P4, but thats just my personal prefference right now(just got a 1.6A to play around with :D) .

The XPs don't look bad either ;) I've seen them get a lot better performance due to being able to get the FSB & RAM speeds up a lot higher than the P4 (by unlocking the XP) But I don't follow it all too much, so I'm unaware of the capabilities of these new chips.

And I have a Z80 sitting here as well. Wonder how high it will overclock with watercooling!! :D

pHaestus 10-31-2002 12:24 AM

AMD is all about "bang for buck" and getting low speed chips and o/cing the crap outta them. When someone says "money is no object" then they want the best. That would be the top end P4.

KnightElite: If AMD had good yields on the 2800+s, then we certainly wouldn't be seeing the dearth of 2400-2800+ chips. No, AMD is hand picking the 2800+s (recall that they mentioned it was a limited edition CPU), and they are apparently having trouble filling in stock for 2400+, 2600+, AND 2700+ as is.

Wherefore art thou Barton? This Christmas would be a good time for such....

iceheart 10-31-2002 01:24 PM

If you have a scientific Texas Instrument calculator there's a good chance that it has a Z80 in it :)

bigben2k 10-31-2002 01:43 PM

I have to admit, following Brad's statement, that price being equal, I'd lean towards the P4, but all in all, I think I'd still pick the Athlon.

Having reviewed mounting solutions recently, the Intel offering is much nicer: 100 lbs max clamping pressure, versus 30. That IHS is really nice, but it is near impossible to lap, considering the mechanics of it, as described by BillA.

I can't wait to see what AMD comes up with, if anything.

pHaestus 10-31-2002 02:42 PM

Is the 100 lb force, in itself, a good thing? It is a requirement to offset the crappy interface between the IHS and the core, correct? I have heard 10-12C lower temperatures upon removal (a scary proposition, however).

I'd buy a P4 and give it a whirl, but I don't need another computer at the moment.

As if necessity were a consideration! :D

fanboyism is bad. Let's think logically. Someone dig up some benches? 2800+ vs. whatever the highest Intel chip is with most aggressive memory timings possible?

bigben2k 11-01-2002 03:46 PM

I've seen P4 2.8 vs AXP 2800+, and the different benchmarks go one way or the other, depending on the application/benchmark.

Overclocked, I would suspect that the P4 would perform overall better due to its bigger memory bandwidth.

It all comes down to usage. AMD has a better FPU, unless the software used is optimized for Intel's latest feature.

mfpmax 11-01-2002 04:42 PM

My Gameboy owns both of them!

Brad 11-02-2002 03:01 PM

I'm waiting for a nforce2 2800+ compared to a P4 2.8ghz with a granite bay motherboard test to be done.

but by then the 3.06ghz will be out - which will probably be the faster cpu overall.
