Just doing another poll here.

What hdd do you think is best? What would you buy? Or are you waiting for 10k drives?

Brad you missed something... There are actually people who buy SCSI harddisks....

I like the DiamondMax 740 because it has excellent specs, but I can't get a straight answer about wether or not it has an unusually high CPU usage.

I like the WD, because of the 8mb buffer, but I have had too many QC issues with them in the past. The SATA version should have a 3 year warranty, but for a price.

Seagate rules! My vote goes to Barracuda 5. Seagate is really on top of the HDD world. Check out their products at storagereview.com .

I have the Maxtor 740x, and can't say enough about it ;)

It's fast and quiet. I think I got around 620 on my last PCMark, and I sleep with this thing on, I hate noise, and I can tolerate this drive even when it is transfering massive ammounts of data around... As far as CPU usage, I don't notice it, but I've heard rumor...

I've been a maxtor man for a long time (ever since the 386 days...), although I did take a short detour to Quantum, which has been absorbed into maxtor anyway :)

Let's see, I have a Maxtor 80 Meg, 360 Meg, 2.1 Gig, 8.4 Gigs, 40 Gig, and of cource, 8 0 Gig.

I also have 2 9.1 Gigs, and 18.2 Gig Quantum Drives ;) I could start a store, or a museum :D

I have multiple other segate (I think a 2 gig, and a 1 gig), western digital (ohh, they're going to BURN), and minor other drives, of no conciquence. Hmm, how about a window mod??

Maxtor bought out Quantum and Quantum screwed Maxtor over because they suck at building hard drives.

Anyone that hasn't had a problem with the new Quantum built Maxtors is lucky.

I still need to RMA my 80 Gig.

Maxtor did experament with combining the quantum and maxtor disk technologies, but they have reverted now (at least, that's what I've heard).

But, then again, my friend built a system (with a little help ;) ) with a Quantum/Maxtor 40 gig drive, and hasn't had a problem since.

However, I did have problems with my WD 6.4 Gig Caviar drive (RMAed 3 times), the same drive that won multiple awards that same year (Computer Shoper was one of them, I'm prety sure). I have had people calling my crazy for not buying and WD drives since, but I had that one problem, and I won't do that one again...

It started to make the infamous "Bad Hard Drive noises" and Disk Errors. And it was after 2-3 months of use after purchase.

Yeah, i'd go back to Maxtor...but not until they clean Quantum out of their system...in fact...I think its a conspiracy against Maxtor for purchasing them.

Even my 20 gig Maxtor it was replacing is lasting longer than the 80...and the 20 gig is 90% Maxtor built.

If you surf other forums(such as the one that has a crappy AquaBlock review), you'll see numerous complaints about the Quantum/Maxtor drive.

I've not bought any IDE drive for 5 years now. Where are the SCSI drives or 'no IDE please' in the choices ?
I'd have voted for the 15K.3 of course :p

I would go for the SCSI route, but it is so expencive :mad:

490 for the drive (maxtor 73.3), and 150 for the adapter/controller (adaptic)!

I could buy alot of extra IDE drives for my onboard RAID controller for that much ;)

I do have to admit, though, they are very fast drives, it is on my wish list of stuff I'd buy if Bill Gates happend to die and leave me all (ok, I'll settle for half) his money...

My vote for Other was basted off of several different factors.

1) No SCSI in list :)

2) I have had great results with Quantum drives, both SCSI and IDE (minus Bigfoots :D )

3) Doesnt mention usage for the drives. LAN party machine or for " turn on in the morning; turn off at night" machine VS "24/7" reliability. It DOES matter.

4) Price an issue?

want speed, get SCSI, want cheap space get IDE.

SCSI is cool, but there is no way in hell I could afford it. I'm running 360gig worth of drives. I would be living in a cardboard box if those were SCSI drives.

Personally I like Seagate drives of late. They have good performance and are extremely quiet.

The reason why I didn't put scsi in is because that will be the topic of next weeks poll ;)

The reason why no Quantum drives are in there is because the Fireball AS series was the last ide hdd ever made as a Quantum drive, and quite simply it's performance is now not top of the pack.

I would never trust IBM again (3 of their crap HDs at home:mad: )

Never liked WD, and that HUGE recall they had almost put the company I worked for out of buisiness.

I've gone with Seagate and have been very happy. But I don't know the difference between the IV & V as I haven't needed a new drive lately :p

well i have 2 ibm 60g gxp, 1 wd 80g with 8meg buffer,2 generic 9g scsi drives, 2 maxtor 40g and 1 maxtor 20g. and i kan not say anything bad about any of my drives. I never heard any funny sounds comin from them and they are runnin 24/7

right now i'm running a store-bought 60gb maxtor 7.2k and a 100gb wd/8mb cache 7.2k, not having troubles with either. most of my experience with both has been very good, i had more troubles with 2000 sp1 messing up the files on the disks more than the hard drives crashing (we used all caviar 20gb 5.4k's at my old job.. a lot of them). they seemed to be pretty good drives, but of course i'll be quite nervous with my data until i can get a RAID setup running... i guess for now i'll cross my fingers and hope that things will remain okay until i get my lan server running.... $$$

my vote had to go out to the WD 120JB.
I've got 2 of these drives in raid0 and I couldn't be happier.
The next HD's I but will be SATA so I can benefit from my IT7 max2 and will prob be like 200 GB and 8MB buffer.
10k would nice too.
basically if the seek times of the largest drive are the same or really close to the fastest drive, I'm game.

I know the WD SE drives aren't "the best" ever, but I'm pretty happy with the biggest/fastest IDE drive I've seen at the time of purchase ( in june).

If I had too much $ to blow, I'd do SCSI in raid 0 (or 0+1) but I can't afford 240 GB of SCSI drives.

I've been told by the WD distro in new zealand that they have a 10k drive in development, and it isn't terribly far from release.

Remember WD are the only drive manufacturer who aren't scared about 10k ide competing with their scsi drives, as WD don't produce scsi drives any more. But at the same time, WD have made 10k drives in the past, so they do have experience in that field

If they made a single 80gb platter drive with 16mb of cache, I'd be perfectly happy. Just make sure the seeks are really low.

Seagate basicly took the Cudda IV and improved it a little in every way for the Cudda V, plus they use 60GB platters now some it tops out at 120GB.

Very happy IV user on this end, Got the drive to replace one of the last reliable IBM's made, the noise diff was shocking at first. Being used to the grind of the IBM when i pluged the Seagate in the first time i thought it might be broken cause it was so damn quiet. I've really grown attached to it though, and sleeping in the same room as my comp has become much more plesant.

FYI the drive does 24/7 heavy duty as a file server, My HDD light stays on almost as much as the power light. It hasn't given me a single hicup in almost a year of this torture. Still as quiet as the day out of the box and very cool running, only 44C from the internal sensor in a location with poor airflow (Its spec'ed to go up to 60C so im not worryed)

Maxtor here.

I've got two Seagates (40G each) and 120G maxtor. Cant say i like the seagates much, i mean they're ok, but not as good. Western Digital is usually overrated.
Maxtor is the "new" Quantum, and over here, if there was "the" HDD brand, it was Quantum. Never saw such great HDD's.

Errrrr, this thread came back from the dead eh? What really sucks is I still use a 20gig maxtor in my main comp. Still works flawless runing 24/7 for years now.

Dunno there, but here , someone farts and a HDD appears... Almost.

They are dirty cheap thou. I'm thinking of getting another 120G one. They're about 80/90 euro. Im always running out of space... damn those...er..backups.

The bigger the better, I say.
