Epox 8k9a problems
 

Just got my 8k9a, trying to set up my first water cooled system.
Everything seems to be hooked up ok.
When i power on, the monitor shows the start of the boot process, but before i can even get into the bios, the powersupply shuts down. The speaker starts to beep, kind of a high, low, high, low sequence. Cannot figure out what is wrong.

Any ideas?

Hardware includes the Epox 8k9a, XP 2000, 512MB KingMax PC2700 ram, WD JB, MSI Geforce 4400, SB Live AUdigy, DD Maze 3, Eheim 1250, Black Ice Extreme, Enermax 465 w PS, Net Server Case A9891.

That's easy. I bet your mobo requires a CPU fan plugged in, and right now it's saying "HEY NUMBNUTS! YOU FORGOT TO PLUG YOUR F*CKING FAN IN!!!"

That's all well and good, except that you don't need a fan, so what you want to do is plug either your chipset or case fan into the CPU fan header, and you'll be all set, alright?

i tried that....new fan..plugged it into the header...no change.


ARGHHHH.

First, if it's beeping, then the PSU is still on. Simply your comp is crashed.
What is your BIOS ? Award ?
Then i cannot remember if it's the CPU or the north bridge. IIRC it's the CPU which is overheating. Try re-seating your block...

That exact same situation happened to me with a Gigabyte low profile computer.

Used the dang thing for 3 months straight at work, packed it up in its original shipping box and stored it in my house for a month, then took it back to work. Pluged it back in and tried to power on; BEEP beep BEEP beep..........high low high low. Finally figured it out.........

Dead CPU!!!!

Dont ask me why but I dropped in a spare CPU from another machine and up it came. Shut it down and put the old one back in, same thing.

Now can some one explain to me how a CPU dies while it is sittting in a machine, IN its orignial box, IN a controlled environment and dies from NO USE?!?!?!

Sorry man.

The fan has to have a RPM sensor on it for my suggestion to work. If the one you tried did, then NM.

CPU fan detection is off by default. try clearing the C~Mos. have you done a search for your mobo/BIOS~chip beep codes yet?...

Ok..wierd thing. Yes my cpu fan was a termaltake with sensors. But that was not the problem.

I took the board out..set it up outside the case, removed the block, air cooled it, and it worked.

So...put on new thermal compoung, block back on. Booted it..it works.

Put it all back in case...still works! So..not sure what the heck it was, maybe it was not seated correctly and was overheating. But it happened so fast.

I do not need the cpu fan hooked up for the system to boot now.

Also...the beeps continued for several (maybe 5) seconds after my power supply was unplugged. It must store some power in there or something.

Anyways...thanks for the suggestions..i was not having fun with this one!

Congrats. Those type of things are scary. Last night when I did a huge mod to my cooling system I tried to fire it up and I got the 4 red led signal of death from my MSI D-bracket (burnt processor). After nearly having a heart attack, I found that my volt mod was screwing up so I unplugged the ground and it worked right. I'm going to have to redo the volt-mod, which is no big deal, but it freaked me out (I don't want to have to use my free product replacement at CompUSA until I can force an upgrade out of them because they don't stock 1900+ chips anymore ... I figure by next June that will be the case).
