marine goop to seal up a block?
aaight,
for sealing up 2 block halves i hear alot of norte americanos talk about marine goop. i imagine this stuff to be some elastomer glue, that doesn't become brittle after long use. some sort of silicone even? |
It's silicone glue.
Click here for more info. I wouldn't recomend it for sealing a block, but it might work, at least for a while. |
ahh, bigben, as usual, thx alot, u r faster than your shadow sometimes
i'm sorry for not finding that thread myself. i see now the problems that the epoxying brings. what would be a good way to seal them up? i forget to tell that the sealing will have the help of 4 allen bolts. so the only thing the goop has to do is, seal up, glueing is not necessary. the seal should last under the mysterious additives we like to use offcourse. at the end of that thread the conclusion seems to be that silicone based goop will not be broken down by alcohol-like substances. |
You can use an o-ring, but don't ask me about them; I'm still trying to figure it out myself!
|
Well I would guess you could use JB-Weld. Its engineered to hold up against stress. I don't know how it would work though.
|
I've been using the stuff on my blocks for a little while now with Hyperlube supercoolant and haven't had a single problem. I think #Rotor uses the same stuff on his too. Try P.M.ing him and see if he has had any problems.

I had good success on a test piece I made - tested under house water pressure.
I applied the goop, tightened the bolts down about 90%, let goop dry, then tightened the bolts down a tad more. Figured I'd use it's adhesive properties combined with a bit of pressure, like an O-ring or gasket. |
now that seems like an awesomely smart thing to do can o' beans. that seem the way to emmulate an o-ring.
@fragn'stein: its because of #rotor that i chose to use that design route for sealing up. @darkedge, that jbweld i have looked into it, it seems like a mighty fine product too, but it will never ever open again, apparently. thx at everyone |
