some advice please
 

i am planning on starting building my new computer around christmas maybe a little after. it is going to be a dual processor system. i was wondering which motherboard would be a good choice. take into consideration that this is going to be my main system which i will be playing games on and all the other normal and unnormal things people do. which i will be requireing a high performance graphics card and i will need the newest thing for the ability to expand. also what os would be suggested i am planning to use either win2000pro or win xp pro. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tyan for the mobo (if AMD) or Asus (if Intel).
Win2K is less f*cked-up than XP.
If you want a real OS that makes good use of 2 CPUs, switch to Linux.

do u think i would have any problems playing games or other regular stuff since win2k is really ment to be for servers? as for linux which one would be suggested that will still allow me to play games and other regular stuff?

If you want to thrash some duallie action, you may want to wait just a few months and invest in a Hammer platform. Unlike the "workaround" MP methods used by Intel and AMD on their desktop systems (face it, the MP chips are just hacked XPs and not optimized), these are designed for some serious multiprocessing work. Just a thought. It'll be more expensive, but there will be tremendous benefits. PCI-X, AGP3.0, Hypertransport, it's all getting thrown into the Hammer mix, not to mention the fact that each processor gets it's own RAM banks.

W2K is more stable and less clogged with silly "features" than XP. No it's not meant for servers, nor is XP. W2K "server edition" is meant for servers...
Anyway with a duallie you usually get SCSI and SCSI with XP is a no-go.

hmm, everyone seems to like tyan?

a bud from work had a tyan dually, the thing kind of got a meltdown at the 5V lines at his atx connector (similar to the pic morphling once showed here of his burnt atx connector). the reseller told him it wasn't covered under warranty because there was visible damage. tyan europe didn't want to rma it either (although it is a known problem with the tyan community over at amdmb.com). now he is trying to get tyan usa to fix him up. because this joke of a service department has him waiting for over 3 weeks now, he bought himself the asus dually. if he ever gets the tyan back repaired, he will sell it.

i always thought paying rolls roys prices, got you rolls roys service, apparently not at tyan. maybe something to consider. if u r from US u shouldn't be worried. but tyan sure doesn't seem to mind losing customers in europe.

well from what i have been researching the dual proc systems are not at all good for gaming and since that is one of my main conserns i think i am going to build a single proc system what does every one think about the new Nvidia chipset on the asusA7N8X with maybe a xp2400 or would i be better off going with a diff. proc for overclocking ability?

I don't know how many times this will have to be repeated: multi-proc systems are for multi-proc applications.

If you want to go AMD I'd have to recommend the MSI or the Iwill.

For the dual Xeon route you'd be looking for one of the new boards with 533fsb and AGP support. Supermicro, Tyan and Iwill have some nice offerings that are available at the moment.
