Vid Card Cooling
 

Is it just me or do you all think that video card manufacturers have missed the boat on building the cards upside down...? It seems and I am bo no means an expert in thermodynamics that if the gpu was facing the top of the case a slower less powerfull fan could dissapate the heat as heat rises and wouldn't be trapped under the card that we are trying to cool. On the same token we could add all the cooling we wanted to the card and not lose a pci slot. If anyone has any connections with a card manufacturer and think this is a good idea please let the engineers know!!!

I have wondered the same thing. And would make for much shorter water lines as well. I'm sure in favor.

Would also do away with the dual blow hole set ups as well, one 120 and your set to go.

It all goes back to the making of the PCI spec.

PCI specs is why video cards and other devices are upside down.

WTX cases solve this "problem" of course.

It seems strange that PCI spec could dictate where manufacturers can and cannot put ICs. Modern video cards are AGP cards and not PCI, I don't think AGP cards need to meet PCI spec. I'm sure they do have to meet AGP spec which may be modeled after PCI. I don't have copies of either so this is all conjecture.

Yep!, they're upside down for sure, same as putting the CPU at the top of the case where it gets [Sarcastic mode ON] the most benifit from natural convection[off]

Seriosly thinking of WTX modding my cheap Ally case so I can fit an Abyss in. I tried ordering a Deep a week ago but it was out of stock, glad it was cause I changed my mind for an Abyss again! :rolleyes: ...

I'm sure this setup will get rid of some heat...hopefully.

Leadtech put a 'fan over the core' heatsink on their Ti500's and it was shyte (albeit ALu though). I'd have more faith in a crystal orb to be honest :( . that thing looks like it'll reach equalibrium at a high temp, the BP would have to be thick to conduct heat all the way to the fins...
The only good inovation is they are throwing heat out side the case...

I think Abit came out with a retail Nvidia card that used "OTES" outside thermal exhaust system. I dont know how well it worked but it got good reviews.

Yeah, saw some more at some Comdex coverage sites...not sure if i'm keen on the taking up two slots...

But the design...can be replicated with a blower...since its pretty much the same as those Slot Blowers that are sold.
