Hayden 676...What'd you think?
Trying to get together a watercooling setup, and have been considering a number of radiators. I first looked at the Danger Den Cube, and the BeCool cube, but I don't know if I like the cube style, it seems as though it would be difficult to mount outside, which if I understand correctly, is the most effiecient way to release the heat.
I know this radiator was featured in one of cases created under the article section, but I would like some more feedback on it. Is anyone out there using it? and how does it perform in comparison to Cubes? Thanks, by the way, I'm new to this forum, but I've been reading it for a few weeks now. |

The Hayden 676 is a bit too narrow for two 120mm fans, maybe ok for two or three 90mm fans. its made of aluminum, so with a copper waterblock you'd be liable for battery effect corrosion, albeit could reduce that by liberal dosing with Redline "water wetter" etc.

Another drawback of the cube style radiators is the thickness. As the radiator gets thicker it gets harder to push the air through them, but they have more surface area than a similarly sized thin radiator. Problem is that we are very air-flow limited in most cases, and when the pressure drop accross the cooler core goes up the airflow goes down. So you will eventually reach a point of diminishing returns by makning the cooler thicker. I would try to stick to a large flat radiator whenever possible, that way you can use a thin radiator...get lots of air flow per fan, and use more fans to boot. Something like a B&M stacked plate transmission cooler where you would have low coolant flow loss due to the multuple flow paths, and low air flow loss due to the thin open construction. These radiators can work with either 2 120mm fans or 3 92 mm fans depending on radiator size and mounting.
I plan on mounting one of these on the top of my case, with the fans mounted in the case to the bottom of the top skin. I will be using the top 2 5.25" drive bays to duct air to the fans, which will be pointed straight up into the radiator. I will also be using AC 110V fans and pump to reduce load on the PC power supply which will be setup on a relay to turn on with the PC. I have plans later for a system which will vary fan speed based on coolant temp, but may never use it. Hope this helps.... Eric |

However...back to my original post...can someone give me some predictions, or straight facts, as to how this would compare to a dangerden cube? or aquastealth cube? I'll be using the 1250 Eheim, which is rated at just over 310 gph. Thanks |

Does anyone know if the radiator shown above. Would work if the air flow was to flow across it?

I have a 676( actualy the hayden part number is 1676) and I love it. I have 3 80mm fans on mine they fit so well you can't tell there is a rad under them. It's mounted to the top of my case and keeps my cpu to under 37*c in a full load. Also to stop the battery efect mix water like this 85% distilled water/15% antifreze or 90% distilled water/10% water wetter.

Just checking but this is an aluminum radiator correct? I have never seen a copper stacked plate radiator but just wanted to make sure.

Well, you could buy an aluminum waterblock. Over at the [H]ard|FORUMS, Fixitt made some nice aluminum spiral blocks:

Read the post, I was the one who first suggested the aluminum/acrylic block to Fixitt, I want an aluminum radiator to go with the block for looks. On the other hand I may just buy a water cooler from Costco and get the copper version of the spiral block....can't decide to spend the $40 on the Rad+$40 for the Pelt or just get the damn cooler....

it is a cooler for bottled water, like you would use in an office....got the idea from here:
chilled water I can get the chiller for $110, and then setup similar to what he has done. Or there is a guy on the [H]ard forums who has reverse engineered the Vapochill and is doing some exparimentation with that, he plans to release the plans in the next couple of weeks on how to make one...my father-in-law is an HVAC guy so it sould be easy for me to do once I have a map. Too many options, all very close in price... :rolleyes: |
Alright, well I think I'm gonna go the way of the 677, however,I just wanna make sure that this radiator is gonna have performance on par with the likes of a d-tek heater core, or big momma. If someone could assure me of this, then I'll click the order button. Thanks again- You've all been helpful

whoever said the hayden 676 is too narrow for two 120mm fans, I don't understand why you would say this. I have two 120mm fans on one and they fit it perfectly. The fans are only about a half inch wider which shouldn't hurt performance at all. The problem with the 677 is that it will not fit alot of cases due to its wide width while the 676 fits perfectly.
