R12?

I've got a canister of R12 which I plan to use when i recharge my system after modding it. My question is, isn't there some kind of oil you put in the compressor before you refill it, and arn't there different oils to be used for different refrigerant?

r12 uses mineral oil(refrideration type) if the compressor is new it wont need any oil(pre filled at factory) but if not and you want to add oil to just be on the safe side.add about 2 table spoons works fine.

Thanks for replying bowman, but when you say "new" what kinda time line are we talking here. Do you mean new as in , i just bought a new compressor..or new as in a compressor that was built within the last ten years?

new as in still sealed ,never been used or installed.

Also, you might think about where you got your R-12 as well. It sounds like your R-12 might be salvaged R-12. If it was salvaged from a scrapped fridge, you might have mineral oil in your "canister" mixed with the R-12. Some salvage places don't bother to filter the captured R-12, so you get some mineral oil along with the refrigerant. Also, be sure that your R-12 is of good quality if it was reclaimed. It could have contaminants in it.
