Real Athlon current draw ?

For my PSU build-up project, i need to know the REAL current draw from AMD CPUs (and their mobo). If someone could measure the current on 5V and 3.3V lines for:
- Thunderbird >=1GHz
- XP >=2.4GHz,
I would be very glad.

I really want the current in the wires that go to the motherboard, no other one. And please state which GFX card and if there's something on PCI bus...

How will you distinguish CPU current draw from the current draw of all the other devices using those rails?

hmm doesn't AMD releases specs about this? And if you purely want it for the cpu, measure it on the power pins :D

But to test current draw you have to put the meter "in line" with the circuit, which would mean masking off the pin on the cpu and hooking the meter in-between it and the mobo...

true... i never said it was easy to do though :D

You mean "pins". I haven't looked at the pinout of the AMD CPU's but I'll guarantee there are a lot of seperate power pins.

yea many many power pins... but amd must have some specs concerning this, or atleast they must release it to mobo makers

gmat 12-04-2002 10:46 AM

No, i meant current draw to the whole mobo, ie mobo + CPU + GFX card + maybe SCSI card, but no peripherals (i'll power the HDDs and optical drives separately)

dax 12-04-2002 11:00 AM

that is going to vary alot depending on the GFX card, what are you planning to do anyhow? (i love psus)

gmat 12-04-2002 11:10 AM

You can read the thread "fanless psu buildup - part one" to know what my plans are...
I want the GFX card included of course, i'll have to power it too... Any 'powerful' card will do (Geforce2,3,4 for example)
So anyone has answers ?

my 2 XP2200+'s draw around 11.5a of 12v at 1.65v, 1800mhz. That was the total draw with one 256mb stick of ram, and an s3 virge pci.

gmat 12-05-2002 08:46 AM

thanx. Any figure on those 3.3V and 5V wires ?

Brad 12-06-2002 01:32 AM

the mpx2 uses 12v for virtually everything...
