Got my Via1300 today, have question
 
k, finally got my via aqua1300 today, i bought the retail version from aquastealth/becooling, not the one already prefited,

anyway this thing comes with alot of its own parts, adapters, valves, elbows etc.

but it also comes with something called a Venturi tube and silencer, does anyone know what that is for or should i use it?

its a small tube that can go on to the outlet attachments.

I think thats for adding air bubbles for aquarium use.

That's correct.

It allows an aquarium user to add air/oxygen to the system.

It's one of those parts that you put in your "Misc." bin...

also, im just looking at the booklet that came with it, it says to use the pump fully submerged, i was just wondering if it will make a difference then, b/c alot of ppl run it inline and i want to aswell, will it reduce the life of this pump?

this is one of those questions that no one wants to answer.

Via's have been used in-line in many, many systems, if not most! The only way to tell for sure, is to try it for yourself: make an in-line test loop (with components), and let it run for an hour or so. Touch the pump to determine how hot it gets, and determine for yourself if that kind of heat level would do anything. In short, if it's still about room temp, you're OK, but if you can't touch it, then it's not.

Now, you can expect the water temp to rise some: that's normal.

Many pumps depend on the coolant to cool themselves, but that's usually accomplished from within the pump housing anyways.

Adding a fan on top/near the pump will do next to nothing, because the casing is plastic, which is an excellent insulator. Gluing heatsink to it will have little/no effect either.

I think that instructions says 'fully submerged' to indicate that pump cannot run 'half sub' or similar, so it is fully sub or inline... I really dunno that running the pump inline can do any damage or shorten the life of the pump...and running inline benefits you less heat transfer from the pump to water...:cool:

well that clears up my worries,
now i just need to get 1/2 barbs for the pump (i got the retail one, not the pre fitted version).

and then i have to find out where to mount this thing, im running out of room:( in my case, i already had to push back the front side of the motherboard to fit in my HC, the case connectors to the MB for power switch, leds, reset switch etc were in the way of the HC, now it should be a tight fit.

and then i still have to come up with a res design, im going to try to make that clear cylinder res, forgot who makes them, but they cost 69us!!!, way to much.

Tht is NOT a good pump to run inline. Though many people have done it, it will result in a pump that could die at any time.

Most pumps under 75 Watts that are Mag-Drive CAN and COULD be used inline, such as the Danner series. They typically don't generate enough heat to damage the system permanently from heat alone. These pumps (with the exception of the Danners which were engineered specifically for both) CAN be used inline without generating too much heat. The problem is that the forward seals aren't designed for it, and you can get leakage, not to mention failure from ingested air bubbles wrecking the drive mechanism.

You best bet is to run it submerged. The Via Aquas are cheap crappy pumps, and the engineering is sub-par. Don't take any chances with an inline setup.

I spent alot of time with a pump expert who has run an aquarium shop for decades before I bought my first pump for inline use after realizing my Via Aqua was a piece of crap (took me 20 minutes).

the problem is that i dont have room in my case to run the pump submerged:(, i might have problems fitting in the pump alone,
im going for a clean fully enclosed look,

the res will be small and mounted outside, thats why im going with a res instead. i will run the pump inline for now, if i experience any problems with the setup, i'll consider running it submerged, but it will have to be in an external res,

plus im not looking to spend alot of money on this, otherwise i would have gone with the enhiem and bought myself a larger case.

i was playing with the pump today, despite what everyone has said, its rather quite, no vibrations [yet], and really powerful. i filled an old 1g fish bowl, and hooked up the pump for inline, the water was gone in seconds.

Interesting observations. What other pumps do you consider "acceptable" for inline use or does this just "apply" to Danner pumps? I didn't realize the Eheim were mag drive and enthusiasts have been running them inline for years. Or are they "cheap, crappy pumps" as well? If not, what would make them more viable than the Via?

Eheims are another line that is designed for inline use as well, and they make no bones about it in the documentation. I was referring to those pumps that were advertised (even in the manuals) as strictly submerged use only (you get dire warnings in the manual of the Via Aqua about running it inline).

Danners are an example of a line of pumps that in most of their manuals never specifies inline use. That's why I used that as an example of a "good" submerged pump for inline use. Others will allow for inline use, but still specify submerged use only (fountain pumps and such), and these also should be considered in what I said before.

Anything that only specifies submerged use, whether free-flow or inline, should be held to the rules I stated above.

i was trying unscrew the intake barb and i kind of opened up the pump, the front housing with the impellers, shaft etc unscrews, anyway, i just put it back in and tightened it, and it sounds a bit louder now, with more vibrating then before

i didnt touch anything just put it back the way it was, its not loud or anyhting, before it was silent, now it just vibrates more, maybe this is the complaint that everyone has with this pump.

any clues?,

well, one problem after the other,
went to home depot to look for barbs that will fit 1/2 tube and screw into the pump, no luck, so i looked for anything else that would reduce the size, but with setup, the input/output would be rather long b/c of all the adapters,


SO. the store was closing and i was still empty handed. and thats when i became desperate, i thought, well i've been standing and looking at the barbs for over an 1/2h now and they obvioulsy dont have what i need, so i had to work with what via gave me,

Via's bards are 5/8th, so i bought 2 feet of OD 1in ID 5/8 tubing, one will attach to the res, the other to the rad, this was alot cheapter then the barbs and adapters.

thanks for the offer petDMC, i've somewhat solved my barb problem, i "Bought" a 1in bard but the thread is a bit smaller, it still screws and stays in, but its loose when screwing it in, i'll use that one for the output, wrap it with tephlon, and put a seal under it and it should do well, as for the input, i will go with the original 5/8 barb and hose b/c they will hook up to the res anyway,

but with one problem solved, i've run into another, my res will be attached to the back with a barb at the bottom going through the case an into the pump. my pump is in the back of the case, if i use a barb on the res and pump, they will get in each others way and i cant connect them:(, b/c of the HC, the pump has to be right behind the HC that gives me maybe 2 inches with the barb on the pump to the back wall of the case :(

lol u and me are in the same boat, i'm trying to figure out how to connect the pump and the res (this is where making your own stuff comes in handy and also being able to use a machine shop :cool: )

heres my idea

get a 5/8 barb and a washer or 2 that fits it
cut the connector off (so u just have the threaded piece)
the drill a hole of that size in the res
put a washer on it, then put it throught the hole that u just drilled
put some sealent (or if you want you could just tap the res so the barb screws in) the place another washer on the other end
then just screw it into the pump inlet

i hope u can understand what i mean :D

I don't know what your res looks like, but I have my VA1300 attached to my res by inserting the intake into a hole in the res and gooping it up. Been running it for about 6 months, and no failures. Noisy tho...

Good luck to you if you use non-standard thread. You're going to end up spraying coolant into your case if you're not very VERY lucky. Teflon tape can only do so much.

i'll be making the res latest monday,
im going to cut the res barb to allow me to connect the pump to the res, i went out an bought the needed material, wont list them now, i'll show you guys the finished Computer, im already making a site,

as for the pump noise, i cant really explain it, i was running it inline, when i finished playing with it, i tried to take off the front barb and unscrewed the piece that hold the shaft and impellar, (comes off easily) so i screwed it in, the noise is more of a vibrating from the inside noise, i'll check that out later, the pump will be screwed to the bottom of my case anyway (on foam), so it wont vibrate against anything

modding is so much work, after the plumbing is done, the electrical work has to start, i have to 5v/12v mod my 3 case fans to one DPDT switch, and my 120mmHC fan to another DPDT switch, plus i have to wire leds for both 5v/12v, then make a power swtich with LED for pump (dont want relay), and another pwr switch for the case lights im going to make. ahhh i want to give up!!!

since my case is being modded, i've been using a new spare case, bought it a while ago (intended to build another computer, but never did),
im having some problems with it, all i have in is my 2 hd, vid,sound,ethernet, tv tuner and thats it,

1.asus probe is giving me a reading of 13.056v on my 12v rail, cause for concern?
2.also i just noticed my vidcard fan has stop turning, i pulled out the vid card, and you actually have to apply pressure to turn the fan, its like its seized up. the fan was working maybe 2 days ago
3. it running hot, around 47-50c (116-122f), case is open on both sides, and mb temp is 28 (82f), room temp low 20's, also have no fans in this case, thats why i left it open, and still high temps, with the case im modding, completely closed, my mb temps were maybe 1c higher then room temps,
4. windows is studdering:( when i open up stuff, its really jerky on the screen, its not doing any extra work or anything, heat issue? maybe vid card overheating? or NB, i have no fan on my NB broke a long time ago, just the aluminum thing it slides into,

and im only running at 1400mhz,

Koslov: that's what I had to do with mine. Couldnt take the noise anymore and replaced it with the Ehiem. MUCH quieter.

I was just interested in seeing if there is a solution to the problem other than replace the unit.

Sounded like Billa had a possible solution for the problem but I just got too frustrated with the noise and opted for the quick way out (and save what was left of my sanity :D )

My pump didnt have the option of a "loose" impeller. It was solid to the magnet.

Billa's idea had to do with the intake line and making it big enough.
