how to make a bong?

how do you make a bong?
where do you get supplies?
how do you keep the dust out?
is it better than traditionanl heatercores?
thanks for helping out a newb.

You take a two liter bottle, right? Poke a hole in the side. Then you take a length of copper pipe going in from the side and down into the bottom of the bottle. Then you seal the hole with duct tape. Make a bowl out of pipe fittings and put it at the top of the pipe. Then you cut a hole in the other side of the bottle about halfway up so it's about 1" in diameter. Fill the bottle up to about 2" below the second hole, but so that the bottom of the pipe is submerged, and put your favorite combustible in the bowl. Light it, cover the 1" hole, and suck like crazy until the area above the water is full of smoke, then clear your lungs, uncover the 1" hole, and suck like crazy. I hope you were sitting down.

Well, you asked ... hehehehe.

ROFL! It's better than a heatercore!

local hardware/plumbing stores

use an air filter on the intake

craps over heatercores if done right

my first watercooling setup used a bong. the reason i switched to a heatercore was mainly the fact that i had to refill it all the time. has anyone come with a good way to refill them? ive seen ideas that are kinda like how those cat food dispensers work where you attach a bottle to the side that will let water in when the water level goes below the entry point. has anyone here come up with something better? im thinking about going back to a bong cause it works better than my bix pos and i busted the inlet to my mag drive 3 so its pretty much only good as a submersible now.

How often did you have to fill that thing golovko?
And how much?

Water usage in a bong depends on a few factors, but my bong can use up to 5L (1.3us GAL) a day if left on 24/7, and my bong is very water efficient (only water loss is through evaporation) some of my earlier designs used a lot more.

airspirit 01-30-2003 11:33 PM

If you tried the bong I described, you wouldn't care how efficient it is ... hehe. It's amazing what those alternative school kids can show you when everyone is bored (save your stepdaughter while there's still time!!!).

Bongs work best in dry conditions right?
Do you think it would still be able to work well in a Georgia Summer (90% Humidity, 39C)?

bikr 02-17-2003 02:30 PM

toilet mechanism <--spelling , would work rather well , in theory..

airspirit 02-24-2003 09:54 AM

With that high of humidity, it wouldn't work nearly as well. Since the ambient humidity is already near saturation, the air passing through it won't absorb as much water and therefore will cool much less.

Curious , what is the best type of shower head to use? Would one of those powered alternating ergo heads work? or is just a standard pass through head the best.. Also , What about custom fab'ing one. Are there any problems with shower heads that making your own head could fix? Ideas wanted!! --Josh

airspirit 02-25-2003 05:19 PM

high flow
high spread

An alternating head won't help (unless you want a massaging bong ... ).

Think black market elephant shower ....

Make lots of small drops or use a wick-like pad like evaporative coolers use. What you are trying to do is make a lot of surface area for the liquid to evaporate.

plastic bottle

Take an empty plastic bottle/container. One with a 'squirt' cap, so you can easily connect your hose. Then you make many small holes with a needle. When it is full of water, it should barley leak, just 1 or 2 drops - if any. The trick is that just a little pressure gives you very fine jets. Moreover, it is easy to fine tune just by blowing little air in the bottle with your mouth.

What about gunk?
OK, the water is flowing, so it should keep itself fairly clean because of that.
Salmons thrive in flowing water, but they don´t make it through the pump, but there are other nasty lifeforms in the air, bacteries, yeast fungi etc. Does the open concept of a bong mean a lot of yucky things in the waterloop? How can I kill whatever gets into the waterloop before it kills the waterblock?

There are treatments that you can get that are specifically designed for use in cooling towers, however I've been using evaporative cooling for over a year and now I simply use straight tap water, I use an inline seive to keep larger water borne dust particles out of my block (and pump) and I replace the water completly every month or so, I do get a very thin slime in the res(can't see it, only feel it) but it doesn't affect anything.
