What software do you use to design blocks?

Well I finally have access to a nice mill and my roomate just got hired as a machinist, so I figure its time I start work on my own block :)

So anyway I see all these cool diagrams people are making and I'd like to try them myself. What should I look into?

I'll chime in, for Utabintarbo:

SolidWorks 2003.

jaydee 01-20-2003 08:43 PM

Coerel Draw 9, ACAD2000, and now SolidWorks 2003. Still have no clue how to do anything in SolidWorks though. :D Other two are pretty easy though.

Neomoses 01-21-2003 03:02 PM

AutoCAD 2000 right now, but I may have to look into solidworks. It looks pretty nice.

Mikey Boo 01-21-2003 05:38 PM

Tyfoid 01-21-2003 06:39 PM

First I draw them with good ole' fashion pencil and paper. This is because I am ussually bored and trapped at work. I then come back and use Autocad...

I couldnt imagine using anything else other than Solidworks. And its photoworks add-in is very comparable to 3dMax in rendering quality. I got 3Dmax too, but I like to do it all in one program before converting it to Gcode.

How could you make it look that good? Solidwork cant make those things?

bigben2k 01-24-2003 11:56 AM

I haven't installed it yet, but I have the file to prove it.

Utabintarbo is quite busy at the moment, and may be so for the next few months, so unfortunately, I can't answer your question.

Which part do you doubt? The clear top?

ChrioN 01-24-2003 01:02 PM

yeah, for example. and the nice colorshifts

bigben2k 01-24-2003 05:44 PM

If you're referring to the shading, it must be from a "lightsource" kind of option. Otherwise, there's no color shift or gradient: all the individual parts are the same color.

jaydee 01-24-2003 08:47 PM

There are 2 parts to solidworks. One is the drawing part and one is called PhotoWorks. PhotoWorks does all the 3D rendering like what bigben posted. My design engineer buddy is coming over tomorrow and showing me how to use SolidWorks2003. He uses it 8hrs a day every day for his job. :)

ChrioN 01-26-2003 06:09 AM

I cant find any photoworks...I use solidworks 2001.

Maybe a bad *cough* rip *cough*

It should have been an option when you installed it, and then after you start up solid works you have to add it in. After that you can render with it. Had a good lesson on it yesterday.
