Some GeForce FX pics....

GeForce FX
GeForce FX #2
GeForce FX #3
GeForce FX #4

Someone over at [H]arse posted the single slot version with standard heatsinks sometime last week...looks like the same computer too.

Won't be getting one of these for at least 2 years :)

This is a doubble slot version from the Comdex show where two former 3dfx guys, now working for Nvidia talked about GeForce FX and showed what the card can do.

Bah, how one would watercool that beast with a single 40x40mm waterblock ? ??

hara 01-22-2003 10:41 AM

Stock cooling looks so good that watercooling may well be futile.

gogo 01-22-2003 10:49 AM

I would like to know how loud it is, and if it would quiet down if they actually screwed the fan to the case. It looks to be all copper, the weight and the torque of the fan can't be good for adheisive, esp once you start adding some heat to it.

duh, obviously stock cooling will be fan-based, which is a no-go. Most ppl watercool their vid card to get rid of the fan, not to get "better cooling"...

koslov 01-22-2003 06:28 PM

Yeah, I think the GFFX will actually be a good candidate for watercooling. If the core dissipates enough heat to warrant that huge thing, watercooling will take care of it in a snap. Watercoolers will be getting much better OCs on them too, I bet.

Hopefully manufactures will stick with the reference design, that way we will have some nice mounting points for ram blocks as well.

Ora...

I've seen this picture (below) , but im not that sure if its the reference card. Anyway, there are several mounting holes that i can see, and the current memory placement it shouldnt be that hard to watercool it, maybe one big happy block (like morph's). Im not really sure of those placement, but hey, its not "really out there", so i'll (we'll) have to wait and see.

PS : if the images dont open, please let me know.

PS 2 : it seems that Nvidia is copying the p4 cover scheme. I dont really like it.

Blackeagle 01-23-2003 12:33 PM

That is one huge cooler on both sides of the card to boot.

Wonder what that thing weighs.

At least they tried hard to offer a decent stock cooler.

TerraMex 01-23-2003 01:17 PM

Well...

Heck, the same system as the Abit Siluro , and personally, im not that excited. The Abit sounds like a small jet engine and the cooling performance is not as good as one should expect from an exaust system, with a copper base and fins. Interesting enough, a friend of mine with a Albatron ti4280PV gets better OC performance from stock cooling than the Abit.

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1313 , another good example.

Never the less, as long as it can be removed, im sold. ;).

PS : After intensive examination, i got this. Still not sure about those 4 near the GPU, but the mem 1 / 2 spots with the 2 near the GPU are correct (as far as i know).

gmat 01-23-2003 01:24 PM

Are the two in corners around the GPU (not the four just around) in the same place as GF4 ones ? That would mean that a waterblock which fits a GF4 would fit a GF FX...

TerraMex 01-23-2003 01:54 PM

Pois...

Found a review from HotHardware :

Back pic.

It seems to me that the mouting holes are pretty standard. The 2 around the GPU that is. The odds that a gf4 heatsink/waterblock will work are huge ;) .

PS : Larger exaust than that, and i bet someone's home computer takes off. After seeing a lawnmower fly, i belive in anything.

All I heard from the guys who took the pics, is that the nvidia guys didn't want to tell much about the cooling since they are trying to get a patent on it right now. Only info they gave was that the technique comes from N.A.S.A. (yes the wonderful american space agency).

PlawsWorth 01-23-2003 04:04 PM

Ps The cooling solution seen on the pics I posted, will only come on the fastest version, all the others will have some sort of smaller and more practical cooling.

Our tax dollars at work.:D
New heatpipe technology, from the same technology that brought you the memory foam matress, Velcro(tm), and the ability to urinate in zero gee.

Brad 01-26-2003 03:25 AM

I can't see why they only have copper fins on the exhaust side. why not half on the entry and half on the exit?
