BigBen2k airtrap

Some might remember this monstruosity:

Well, I'm rebuilding it from 3/4 parts. Here are some parts, including the flange I've mentionned (and the 1/2 bolts!)

gmat 01-27-2003 06:24 PM

Looks like a piece of toilet conduit :D

*ducks* :p

Seriously, why a 2-part airtrap (and that huge..) ? I may have missed something there.

The original one I made based on 2 inch clear acrylic I pick up in the FS/FT forum. It dictated the use of 1 1/2 PVC parts, and I wanted something that would bolt through the top, but of course the outlets would have to point down. It's basically a tee, with a bend.

Like I wrote earlier, it actually clears all air in 10 seconds, so the concept works.

Now I'll be re-building it at about half the size!

Here's an old "fitted" pic:

Here's the 3/4" unit.

I ran a pressure test on the core, and in this pic, it's got the flowmwter attached to the inlet (with a 1/2 to 3/4" threaded adapter).

Now that I'm looking at it, I've decided that I'm going to re-build it again, so that it comes out the back of my case. It'll also have Schedule 80 parts, which are dark grey, to match the color of the case.

HEY!!!! BB what are you doing?! Starting another Airtrap post, when I've got a nice one going? Man you're going to take away from my good posts... geesh! That thing is UGLY!!, Hff! btw

Zhentar 07-31-2003 06:10 PM

clears all air in 10 seconds? good lord, whats the secret!

last time I knocked over my Res (my res's biggest flaw is that I keep knocking it over) it took like one and a half minutes to clear all the air it picked up.

airspirit 07-31-2003 06:27 PM

PVC tubing can make some excellent airtraps. I have a similar one ... mine is just a little bigger ... about four feet bigger, to be precise. It clears all air in two circulations, or about one minute (I'm moving 5 gallons through around 80-100 ft of tubing for god's sake!).

Wide PVC is highly recommended if you have the space in your case to accomadate it ... or you can go with a football design, like I USED to have on my pimprig. That's a bit ugly, though ....

bigben2k 07-31-2003 06:34 PM

LOL@V12! It's been around for a long time! I'm just updating the threads in my sig. ;)

The level of the fluid in it is the real secret: keep it as high as possible. Otherwise, it's all in the size of it. The popular 1/2" tee just don't cut it.

In fact, I might go back to 1 1/2" PVC parts...I just hate to order mode clear acrylic (actually this one is polycarbonate).

Will my Air trap work? I don't have a water cooled setup yet, but I was thinking about going this route...

Yes, actually, that's a fine design, with the limits stated in V12|V12's thread, here:
http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/sho...&threadid=7266

Of course you still have to secure barbs to it, without leaking.

Zhentar 07-31-2003 10:31 PM

I have just applied the latest batch of silicone sealant to my reservoir. after it dries I will post it's pictures. I'm not whether I should call it "Leak, I dare you!" or "How to go completely overboard with Silicone Sealant". One thing will be clear in these pictures: The average porn star has less silicone in her breasts than this reservoir has on it.

I've used an entire tube of silicone sealant on this thing. Maybe this time it will stop leaking.

Obviously these silly little "test caps" aren't good enough for mounting barbs.... maybe I'll pick out a new res on mcmaster with real endcaps.

Speaking of which, where can I get like 6 inches of 2" clear PVC? Mcmaster wants $40 for 8'. way too much on both counts.

Has to be the hardest part!

Phant0m51 07-31-2003 11:16 PM

It was supposed to be a joke lol. I have a real idea for an air trap, and it doesn't include a pop bottle.

I'm going to start working on building my new case, and setting up my water cooling, then I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

bigben2k 08-01-2003 07:13 AM

For PVC parts, you should be able to get them locally. Otherwise, I price shop between McMasters and USPlastics.

Sometimes it's cheaper to get a short section of polycarbonate, than a long section of acrylic.

Zhentar 08-01-2003 10:27 AM

the PVC selection at my local Lowes well... sucks. At least its only about a 3 minute drive from my house.

bigben2k 08-01-2003 10:28 AM

Yep. I've had to go to both Lowe's and Home Depot to find everything I need: no one store has it all.

Zhentar 08-01-2003 10:39 AM

Unfortunatly, Home Depot is more like a 20 minute drive.

Even more off topic... whats the clearflex equivalent on usplastics?

bigben2k 08-01-2003 10:45 AM

Dunno.

I only use vinyl, and braided vinyl.

Zhentar 08-01-2003 10:51 AM

hmm, this stuff looks good:

Braid tubing

33 cents a foot at 1/2" ID

Choices, choices.

Think we can pull this anymore off topic? :)

Dammit, it keeps putting a line break in the URL... anyways its braid PVC tubing.

Zhentar 08-01-2003 05:00 PM

I'm working on a new res now... its got a few design improvements:

1. It doesn't leak
2. It doesn't leak
3. It doesn't leak

and those are the only improvements, everything else got much worse. my new "res" makes a T splitter + fill tube look advanced; its just a barb splicer filled in a bowl of water.

I think I need to work on my PVC parts a bit.

V12|V12 08-03-2003 09:22 PM

Okay... That's it! BB, I DEMAND you CEASE AND DESIST with this obvious attempt at taking over from my great Airtrap-Design thread (which should btw get a sticky, since people are constantly battling with new designs and making new systems), you SHOULD redirect all posts and inquires to MY THREAD ASAP... or further LEGAL ACTION will take place...

--You have be SERVED! :evilaugh:  :evilaugh:

lol

bigben2k 08-04-2003 06:47 PM

LOL!

Tell you what: I'll bump your thread, and (re)post a link. ;)

V12|V12 08-04-2003 07:11 PM

Hey! Alright, sounds great... I've gotta fight for threads around here! Soo many people starting threads that have already been started, and usually have many responses, just that folks don't take the time to SEARCH for them :) THanks BB, I'm heading to Home Depot/Lowes now to check and see of they have any Clear Tubing etc... Later on all!
