NB block design suggestion
 

hi, gonna be making a NB block, i just need some suggestions on the design,

the materials i will be using are a copper base and brass water housing, i have to use brass housing b/c the copper i have is about 5mm thick so its good enough for just the base,

since the brass will be the housing, the way the water flows inside will depends on the design i drill (i'll be using a drill press) in the brass, so my question is, what would be the best design to drill into the brass? i was thinking of just an open design like the swiftech block have, OR a U shape.

as for the base, here is what i came up with, i will be drilling pits into it,

first you have to check out whether the brass and the copper are going to make a battrey effect, i'm not an expert in this region but the only thing that i know is that it is better not to mix two types of metals in a setup like this.

if you are aming for a block like that, you don't you try the #rotor instead??

I think that all that drilling for a NB is really overkill.
A much simpler design would work just as well for it.Its not like it going to be getting anywhere near as hot as a CPU die anyway.

I would just do an open cavity like the swiftech or go with the U shape as many commercial offerings have done.
If youre using a drill press to do the block, the open cavity can be done using a tungsten carbide Dremel bit to pocket it out.
Ive done it a few times when I didnt have the proper equipment and it works quite well.

Oh and I would save some time and wondering and just use all copper. Then you really wont have to worry about corrosion all that much, and can concentrate more on frying your CPU from overclocking too much;)

Brass is an alloy made of copper. Copper and brass mix well in watercooling. This can be seen by the amount of people using copper blocks, brass heatercores and barbs. Secondely, the #rotor method is quite restrictive and Northbridges don't produce that much heat after all. So if this block is going to be put in series with the loop, the #rotor method should be avoided. Northbridges could be even cooled passively so making a high performance block for a NB is useless. I consiter lucas'z design more than enough. :)

yup, thats why i picked brass, i could have made the entire thing out of alu but then i would have the battery effect.

and i think i will be going with the open cavity for the housing, i figured why take away surface area from the copper by covering it up with brass.

the only problem with the open cavity is clearing it out after i drill into the brass :( i guess i can use those bits, but wont that be bad for the drill press, i'll be putting presure sideways onto it.

i think i'll be using a die grinder (pretty much a big dremal) hows 15000+rpm sound :D

one more question,

is the new nforce NB chip the same size? i might be buying the new epox with the nforce chip an i want to be able to transfer my w/cing over to the new mobo

Instead of making a cavity in the brass block just make a few holes and hacksaw a hole in it, then cover the whole thing with a brass(or copper) lid.

thought of doing that, i just dont have brass/copper lid thin enough do that, and i dont want this block to be very heavy/thick
the slabs of brass are 3/4in, and the copper base is about 1/4 (5-6mm)

and i already have a way of making the cavity,

remember this post? started it over 2 months ago, and my w/cing setup is still not up after 8 months even though i have had all the parts for over 3months except fot this NB block. well enough procrastination, before i couldn't finish this because of school and exams and crap like that,

but now im done school and i gotta get this setup up, my cpu temps are 51 idle now:( (dust build up on HSF) and thats not even o/ced, which is my plan once i get this setup!!!

not much, but i got the base plate done, its 6mm, the base with the holes is about 2-3mm thick,

but the problem im having now is the brass cap, i've started drilling it, hopefully i can get that done this week (work!!:( ) i gotta empty the entire thing and leave a small divider in the centre

i changed the base plate a bit, i though that it was still to thick with the original pits, so i enlarged and deepand them

im only worried about the cap and the circulation inside :( hopefully the REALLY turbulant water will help:(

im also thinking of hopefully getting an Nforce2 and a 2500XP soon, but not sure if i should wait until the Nforce 3 board and new AMD chip comes out, hopefully these will be out by the end of summer. and then i will use the same waterblocks for that.
