Go to home depot.. find a toolcase.. use dremel or rotozip to cut hole, insert equipment.. mark tiewrap points.. take out equipment.. cut out holes for wraps, paint if needed, insert equipment, tie down.
There should be no reason to pay for this premade. Better yet, mod your case to hold your equipment. A tight fit, but if you want to impress someone, this would be the way. I personally bought a large case with a window.. am going to mod soon. |

Remember that the shroud inside the box is key. What's that thing cost anyways, like $120 for an aluminum shroud and an acrylic heavy duty box?
2 24x48x3/8 pieces of acrylic can be had for $83 from www.usplastic.com . Then you can make everything out of acrylic, and save $35 as long as you can cut acrylic well and get it right, you save nearly $40. If you do it all out of aluminum, the material is cheaper($50-60), but the cutting is more difficult. |
yeah, i know how to build it but i don't know what equipment i need to make it so the fans are power separately from the computer system.

You need a 12VDC power supply. You can buy one of the small ones from Meanwell for around 20-30 I think. Then, if you want to turn the fans down use a variable resistor or a rheobus.

I would say you need less than 40 watts unless you're running tornado fans or something. And if you are you are crazy, and will go deaf. Here's a list of a bunch of the mean well's and their characteristics.

If you look at, say, the D-50A or something else on that page, you see how most of them look. I don't know enough about these to know if the 45W comes with a frame. Look around at these, because you probably want to buy one that looks more like the D-50 (if the 45 thingie really doesn't have a frame). Anyway, I'm not sure, good luck

I am actually building an external enclosure for my pump and rad. I am a project manager for a commercial roofing company and we have an awsome sheet metal shop (add that to the fact that I can throw a few 4' X 8' sheets of pretty much any metal I want onto a job cost) but I am building mine to the exact width and leangth of my case and maybe a foot high, I am going to pop rivit it to the bottome of my case so that my case is actually sitting on it. (going to use a piece of pvc pipe at each corner for support)
I am doing it cuz basically I don't want my case extremely cluttered, and I feel I can get better temps if my rad is external to the case and pulling cold room temp air (without having to push hot air into the case) Casper |
I'm in the midst of having something like what Casper is talking about done for me by a friend who is a machinist. Then off to the anodizer, then on top of my case. I can tell you that, if you can't do it all yourself, it won't save money over the TranZPorterZ, but can be done out of anodized aluminum :cool: Mine will be on top of my case with rubber grommets, and so the wiring can run easily into the case avoiding the need for a separate power supply, but I will still have a power cord coming out for the pump.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about weather it should go on top of my case, or on the bottom. Since I want to maintain the use of my 120mm blowhole, and the fact that all my hot air is blown out of the top half of the case (hot air rises, so my rad should get cooler air toward the floor)
I am putting a seperate PSU in the add-on case as well to power all of my lights, pump, and etc.. BTW, why can't you make it out of pre-anadized alum? Its not that expensive. (bout 42 bux for a 4' X 8' sheet, which is WAY more than needed for this project, you should be able to pick up a 1/4 sheet for 13 bux or so from a roofing company) Casper |

_______________________________________________ Hmmm, that's a much better idea than what I was doing. I'll do that. Yeah, I will lose the use of my blowhole, but I can use much thinner aluminum this way and cut a bit more off the weight of the case. I still want it luggable. |
I am using .040 alum, not heavy at all, what I am doing to make it sturdy is just putting a 1" diamater piece of pvc pipe in each corner, so basicaly the pvc supports the weight of the case and not my rad enclosure, the pvc adds virtually no weight, and the alum. case can't be more than a pound or so (without the rad and pump etc...) Since I have the matterial to test out a few things, I might even cut a whole in the top of the box and let the pvc come out 1/2 an inch or so, that way the case is attached directly to the pvc, I just dont think that space will be to aestheticly pleasing.

Hey casper, have you considered using a fair number of thin rubber grommets/washers to separate the two without making it visible?

Was actually thinking about using plaster, or something similar that I can sand down and paint with the rest of my case.
