"Deviation" Waterblock by Ankalar
Hey, I've been thinking of a waterblock design for some time now and I just got around to making it in 3D. The main idea is that the tilted inlet barb will lead to a higher flow rate. The pins right after the water comes in would (hopefully) push the new water to the walls of the grooves and push the thin layer away. I don't know if I would need more pins than this to be effective at all, but this is just the basic design. The top of the waterblock will probably be lexan or whatever type of plastic that would work the best. Do you know if it would be possible to cut the top at an angle like I have it on my model? Comments, criticism, suggestions, etc. are welcome.

I've had the angeled inlet in mind for a long time, its a very good thing to have on a highflowblock... i like the macie ;) |

I don't believe that the channels ned to extend that far, given that a core (and heat source) is central.

Yep, Cathars proved that it's the central core area that's crucial, the old big maze designs will work well up to a point and be good for TEC cooling. I'd have a straight set of fins/pins like Cathars block and have the outlets layed over at an angle to reduce exit backpressure and improve impingment...

ben, you're right, i don't really need it to go that far, so i'll probably change the model to look sorta like the one you attached.
oh yea, i have a question, on the athlon64 and opteron it looks like there's a heatspreader, so wouldn't that mean that the water should atleast extend until the end of it? |
There will be a heatspreader on the next AMD's, but the core underneth will still be small.
When you're getting rid of the heat before it spreads to the edges of the heatspreader, the most inportant place to cool wqill still be over the edge of the chip. Nice design though :) |
Keep in mind the seal. No matter what you use, solder, silicone., O-ring, ect make sure you leave enough room for it. Agree with what has been said. Concentrate the cooling on the area that needs it which is the core area. If the inlet is positioned right with a decent pump and you base thickness is close to optimal you shouldn't need ANY channels.
