please post n00b overclocking questions
I'm going to try to make an overclocking and cooling FAQ of some sort. So any n00b questions that you can think of, post here. If you have the answer, that is even better ;). Full credit will be given when the FAQ is finished.

Well, one I had before I realized what it meant and all of that stuff was what the SPD settings and such were. Also what should they run at (i.e. 3/4, 5/6 and 1/1) Also just say what the FSB does (multiply it by the multiplier to find the clock speed.) That also works backwards to find out the multiplier, (divide clockspeed by FSB). Thats all I can think of for now, good luck on it.

WTF are CAS timings about?
|
Why doesn't the a7n8x have the drive strength?
Wtf is drive strength exactly (agp/ddr) wtf spread spectrum apart varying oc? |

What do I overclock first/the most: the CPU or the RAM?
How can I get the most out of my RAM? (i.e. FSB versus timings) What can I do to reduce the load on the CPU from peripherals? What tweaks can I make to my OS, to speed up my PC? What tweaks can I make to my BIOS, to speed up my PC? Can I hack my BIOS for more performance? Are there hacked BIOSs out there for my mobo? |
How can I mod my mobo for more performance?
Are there any driver enhancements/hacks out there that I can use? |
What influence does temperature have on the overclocking potencial of a CPU/RAM/NB ?
Can EMI (electromagnetic interference) affect my system ? Does my PSU rails influence my system , and overclocking it? What's pci/agp locks, and what are they good for? |
another topic could be volt modding
how do you volt mod your motherboard, video card ... ? what are the advantages and disadvantages of volt modding. |
Holy shit, I hope most of these don't end up in a newbie overclocker's guide. Can you imagine some noob hunkering down with a soldering iron and some resistors on a brand new motherboard? Similarly, can you imagine the chaos on your forum when some n00b tries to mod a BIOS? Ugh ....
UTA and Ben have the right ideas on a noob type FAQ ... but if this is geared toward people without a clue, why include stuff that will put them on the path to destruction. You know they'll just come back to you with: "Somebody set up us the bomb." |
ok i retreat my suggestion

Actually, I'll be working on this with at least one other guy, and we're planning on making more of an all encompassing guide, from newbie to hardcore overclocker. So volt-mod questions are definitely in. And it seems likely newbies will read the words "volt-mod" somewhere, and want to know what it is, so it makes sense to me to include it in the FAQ.

I stand corrected, then. I've started a similar endeavor myself, but after I got over 30 pages of stuff together, I wonder if anyone would even take the time to read it all? Them's the brakes, tho.
|
Well? When are we going to see it?

I've got exams and no computer right now. I should be starting the week after Easter weekend.

Dude, here is the massively cropped version of my ultra-n00bified overclockers guide. Give it a look if you're curious. If there are things that are referenced but do not exist or if there are curious grammatical issues it is probably because I cut out the middle of a paragraph/section to save space. It is down from over 30 pages to about 4-5.
I removed the massive database of BIOS features since most are irrelevant, the faqs on unlocking and wire mods (since they are available everywhere anymore), 86'd the detailed watercooling section (not necessary for overclocking and just plain confusing for those not mechanically inclined), butchered the air cooling section (how to set up your case for maximum flow), and generally pared it down to a reasonable size that gets the job done. I hope you guys like it. |
airspirit....
perhaps a link? :D. |
|
Alrighty, I'm starting up correlating all the questions I've gathered into sections today, might even start answering them :D.

Whats overclocking?

It's a perpetual daylight saving time, it will run the clock faster so you won't be late on your daily errants. It's not recommended to overclock for more than one day, cos' it will mess up your system. Another good tip I got from the master haX0r here is to put a fresh batteries in the flashlight before attempting to flash the bios and other components. |
Here's a popular one,
How do you use a set of alligator clips and a pot on a videocard or motherboard? No not that type of alligator clip or pot:D |
