Rattling Eheim 1048

Newbie question:
My Eheim 1048 makes an annoying, but not loud, rattling sound.
I supposed they would be silent.
Should I check the pump or is it normal? What inside a waterpump could rattle?

Air bubbles/pockets can make a rattly/scratchy noise sometimes, so can the impellor being loose on the shaft, not all Eheims seem to have loose impellors but if yours does you could try gluing it, try it with silicone sealant first so it can be taken off easily if it's not the fix ;) ...

Thanx fellows.
Listening to the rattle it seems to be worst just when I start the pump, and then calm down a bit.
Quite funny sentences in the translated link, Grungrefjaert. German doesn´t lend itself to translation without some resistance.
Looks like I have the weekend booked.

Ehmm...
Right now sitting LAN-whacking at a friends. Brought my computer by the Opel. Pump most certainly running, but also silent. No rattling.
Weird.
Anybody any ideas?

I have maxi jet 1000, and it rattles only when I first start it, when it have to move stagnant water in tubes. If I start it and then after few seconds restart it, the rattling dissappears and the pump is almost totally silent. Thats why I run it 24/7.

Maybe to try the impeller mod?

Cheers!

Centrifugal pumps are not self-priming. That means that you have to flood them with water before turning them on. If the pump is not flooded, then the impeller cannot center itself and the pump will rattle. In moving your system, you might have done something that is causing the pump to fully flood, hence, no more rattling.

Tell us more about your system. Do you use a reservoir? If not, how do you remove all air from the system? Air in the system might cause the problem.

Also, tell us about bringing your computer to the LAN party. Did you tilt the computer at all?

MadDogMe 03-29-2003 05:29 AM

It was probably just air in the system that worked out while tilted in handling...

If it comes back check you hoses, pump~outlet and CPU ones for airtightness, don't look for water leaking, look for air bubbles or a 'scratchy' noise of air entering...

PS, is the pump at a highpoint in the system or a low point?...

msv 03-29-2003 07:11 AM

No reservoir, pump at the very bottom of the waterloop.
Got the air out of the system by tilting teh computer around, turning upside down etc.
Don´t think I hit any major bumps going to LAN. Had the computer standing upright in the Opel.
LAN-buddies calling me names, back later. ;)

OK, don´t laugh now:
Rad (B.I Micro), 1/4"-> 3/8" adapter, pump, WB, T-connector for filling/bleeding, 3/8" -> 1/4" adapter, back to rad. Might be some air traped in the adapter between rad and pump. might be hard for pump to suck water through adapter and/or from B.I.M.bo.
Doesn´t seem to be any more air stuck in WB.

msv 04-16-2003 05:12 AM

In the link sent in by Grungrefjaert (thanx, Grungrefjaert!), there is mentioned a Eheim mod 2, setting some magnet fixed in its position. Any info on this mod?

Mine too seems to rattle a bit and then calm down, but it vibrates quite a bit.

I just bought another so I'll give that a go and see if its the same.

A very liberate interpretation of Graystars tip works to some degree. I start the pump, let it run for a minute and then (if it rattles) i restart it. Works fairly well. Going to give that tape-mode a serious try.

Sorry Puzzdre. Not only a liberate interpretation of Graystars tip, but also a direct copy of Your tip.
I knew I got it somewhere.
Thanx.

hey guys;

once i had the same problem and gmat pointed me to the all famous impeller glue mod. worked like a charm, there is no eheim that leaves my hands without the mod now.

easy way to check if it will work:
run the pump without tubing or rads in the kitchen sink, if quiet...
the link by grunjefjaert will do it.

Geeesh!
A.k.a. Goddammit!
Just modded acording to the link Grungrefjaert sent.
Thanx fellow!
This rattler just went, well maybe not dead silent, but at least *very* discrete.
I know what I would write in swedish, but I don´t know how to make it in english, but I´m really grateful. A lot!
Next move would be to do something about that towncrier for a fan on my graphic adapter, rid miself of that B.I.M.bo rad...
Hey, why didn´t anyone tell me this is addictive? ;)
regards from a very happy
Mikael S.
