P4 2.4 Ghz dead or Asus motherboard dead?

I was trying to fix an Asus P4T-E because when I turned the system on nothing showed up on the screen. Everything inside was running: fans, m/o light everything even the hard drive. But no short or long beep of any kind. Nothing on the screen at all.
So I checked the manual and checked all my connections and settings. So one mistake. I forgot to remove the power cord from the outlet before checking everything. When I turned on the power supply from the back the light on the motherboard turned on and when i press the power button nothing showed up! Can anyone help me???

Is the processor or the motherboard dead?

Will the motherboard short circuit the processor?

Unless you shorted something out while "checking" it, I can't see why leaving the power in would cause a problem. What, exactly, did you do?

Weird to loose video and the startup beep at the same time. Does the HDD get accessed or just spin?

Total, complete guess, but perhaps you mucked up the BIOS somehow? Maybe when you checked your system you didn't reconnect the power header?

I dunno, I'm not so good with giving tech support advice (I'm more hands-on, ), but not knowing anything else I'd unplug the box, double-check every connection, and maybe reset the CMOS. Maybe.

You sure you didn't do anything unusual at all before this happened?

here is a shorter question if i short circuited the motherboard will the processor be also be affected as in also short circuited?

There's not a lot of info to help you here!

Maybe it's as simple as: you accidentally disconnected the power button.

On the other hand, assuming that the PSU is powering on (does the fan start spinning? Does it continue to spin?), you could have a dead PSU, or an overload condition, which causes the PSU to shut down.

As a test, you can actually power up the mobo without a video card: it should force a series of beeps.

Otherwise, it could indeed be a corrupt BIOS.

Need more info!

the fans aren't spinning and the light on the motherboard stays on when i turn on the power supply on the back

if i were you i would unplug everycomponent, even the cpu itself and try to power the motherboard. like ben said this should produce a kind of beeps, if no beeps, then forget you motherboard. otherwise start trying to add some components, eg the cpu, the beep should change. then add the hd and the video card ...

i also do like this when i have some kind of problem.

good luck

You can also test your PSU with the paperclip trick (Google for PSU paperclip, you'll know what I mean ;) ).

If the mobo failed, your CPU *should* be OK. Try booting without a CPU.

...and do remember to switch off the PSU before you remove the CPU...

that's what i suggested

...and that was very good advice! :D

I think the first thing I'd do is disconnect everything, then reboot after adding each one of these, in that order:

-CPU
-RAM
-VC
-HDD

On a few odd models, disconnecting the keyboard will also produce a beep.

If nothing works, double check that the power switch is connected properly. If it is, then the mobo is dead.

Like everyone is saying, take everything off/out, try turning on, then plug stuff in one at a time.

I had one experience where I had forgotten to open the CPU socket lever before inserting the processor, took over an hour to figure out

More often than not it is simple human error ;)

N110203 04-09-2003 05:56 PM

so the processor won't be shorted if the motherboard is short circuited as an example only.

Arcturius 04-09-2003 08:10 PM

I suppose borrowing a CPU is out of the question? :D Or, taking your CPU to a friend and trying it in a known good board?

I had to troubleshoot a problem just like this about a month ago--except my board (Abit KR7A-133) doesn't beep at all when you remove absolutely everything from it--very confusing.

In my case, it ended up that I had a bent pin on the CPU, which I folded in half upon trying to insert it into the socket...
(I designed the installation method for my direct-die cooling system very poorly...)

It was said before--most boards should give you indicator beeps if they're at least partially functional, even if they have _absolutely_nothing_ installed in them. Then again, you may need a minimum of a good board and CPU to get beeps; I did.

"Probably not" is the short answer.

"Possibly" would be more accurate, it really depends on what you shorted. If, for example, you shorted some of the voltage regulation circuitry, you may or may not have shot a lot of power in the CPU, but that's a pretty remote possibility, and involves shorting two pins on opposite sides of a tiny chip.

Otherwise, shorting the power to a mobo would only drop the power applied to it and, by extension, the CPU. A power drop is only lethal in refrigeration, not (usually) electronics.

so in short the processor still works? cause im planning to get a new motherboard maybe soyo px400 dragon lite or P4PB 400-FL Pentium 4 Motherboard.

Yo-DUH_87 04-09-2003 09:51 PM

I have the p4x400 ultra, and it it a very nice board.

However, I have ran into a few problems with it:

The first being that the onboard sound can cause random system crashes, disabling it through the bios solved the problem (but I had to buy a sound card). There may be updated drivers out for it.

The second thing is not realy a problem, but could be a slight bummer for the mad overclocker. Overclocking on this board is a bit limited, and the only deviders I have access to are the RAM deviders. Meaning that every device in the system is overclocked, not only the processor and the RAM.

Everything else works as expected, and flawlessly. I am running a P4 2.4b@2.7 at the moment, but I had been running at 2.84-2.86, durring the colder seasons (and when I only had one computer running in the room).

Once I move off stock cooling (may be awhile, as I have no $$$ at the moment), things should get a little faster.

Anyway, I do hope it isn't your processor ;)

N110203 04-09-2003 10:01 PM

thanks all of you

N110203 04-10-2003 05:28 PM

who else had a problem related to this so that i could apply the solutions to try and know if the processor doesn't short circuit if the motherboard is short circuited at first.
