First Impressions - March 893-04 pump

I came across this little wonder while researching pumps. There's actually several 893 models. The 04 is the submersible motor driven model.

The motor driven model go for about 135 bucks while the mag drive versions go for 150 bucks. These are expensive pumps.

So what makes this pump special? It has a head rating of 10.5 ft (lots of pressure) and a flow rating of 167 GPH (low flow.) High pressure and low flow is exactly what our WC systems need. The significance can be seen in the power usage. This pump, at 12 watts, was pumping more than 60 gph through my system where as my PondMaster/Danner 250 was pumping about 40-45, even though the PondMaster was using twice the power (24 watts.)

Another feature of this pump is the size. It's tiny! It's 2 19/32" X 2 13/16" X 5 1/8". The mag drive pump is shorter, being only 4 1/4" long.

My preferred model would have been the 893-07, which is the open-air, mag-drive model. However, beggars can't be choosers, and I landed this 04 for 25 bucks so I can't complain.

The motor drive models have a motor life of 3000 hrs while the mag drive models have a life of 50,000 hrs. Obviously, the mag drive is the way to go. All the models have the same ratings.

There was one major problem with this pump. It was way too loud. I actually removed it and put back the Pondmaster because of the noise. Then I got the idea to run it at 7 volts. At 7 volts, the pump is moving between 35 and 40 gph and is using less than 1/3rd the power of the pondmaster. The noise level dropped to about that of the Pondmaster. I would like to get my hands on an 893-07 to see if the mag drive pumps have the same noise problem.

Overall it was 25 bucks well spent. I've got two processors being cooled for less than 14 watts (7 watts on the pump and 6.3 on the fan) and it's quiet!
