Plastic barbs - teflon tape?

Do I need to put teflon tape on pastic barbs that are threaded into a plastic fitting on a water pump?

I do just to be sure. Some might say no, or to use something else but I think yes you do.

Yes, plastic is softer and will conform more than a metal one but unless you screw it in sooo tight that the two surfaces litteraly almost bond together, there is still a possiblility of leakage.

Do you really want to take that chance? :)

In the vein of "bonding", could you heat up the copper just enough so the nylon/plastic that touches the copper melts and spreads? Wouldn't this be the most effective method of sealing?

Well, I'm asking because I didn't see anything mentioned in the instructions to my waterpump about using any kind of thread sealer (of course I may have missed it).

I'll be using plastic barbs on the plastic fittings on the pump.

I'll be using teflon tape. :)

My pump manual recomends it, and I use it.

It also makes it easier to remove, afterwards.

Some thread sealers can eat the plastic, so you have to choose it carefully.

I installed sprinklers for several summers and we always used teflon on poly fittings (on the manifolds anyway).

You only need to put teflon tape on taper fittings.
These seal on the thread surface, so the tape helps form the seal.

If your fittings are parallel (or straight), they normally seal on the face by means of an O-ring and have no need of teflon tape.

Eheim pumps, for example, use a parallel thread and do not require teflon tape or sealant.
They seal by the O-ring supplied.
