Tecs and supplies.

Question about tecs. Say I get a 220w peltier for my cpu. If I used a variable psu to power this, it will be able to run say 110w instead. I'm not sure if I want to have a tec going all the way down to -10c or whatever. Maybe just hold it above ambient. It wont burn it out or anything will it?

Also, anyone rated the temps on video cards? I have a 8500 64mb retail, and only have a crystal orb on it right now. I'm sure the newer cards are way up there in heat output. The new GF FX looks way to considering the sink they put on those, not to mention the 9700/9800s that are overclocked.

Its funny to have so much time put into extending a cpu by decreasing the temps, but the video cards are always being pushed by the companies with no thought of the future. I dont like losing parts of my pc from anything. Lost a cd-rw from pci overclocking, and a dvd from the same. 300 dollars is enough for me.

-10C is only on noload or chiller configuration. The block will be warmer that -10c while absorbing the heat and the CPU will be warmer again generating the heat.

In actually use, you will probably get down to +10C CPU or so using a decent water cooled system and moderately OC'ed CPU. So, if you vary the voltages, it may get up to 15~20c. Negative CPU temps are hard to achieve and harder to maintain.

In my chiller setup, my coolant is -10c, the block is -4c and my CPU is +3C under full load. These are uncalibrated temps taken with different source.

I like the idea of having a cpu or any chip right at ambient. Less chance of damage to it. I wonder if you could wire up the supply to use a thermo resistor to tell the supply to up and down the power to keep it right at ambient. Less heat coming off the tec, keeping the water down, and allowing the water cooler to allow for more blocks to run, possibly with more tecs.

Anybody know about this.

I believe that some one already posted a link to a variable PS for pelts ... might want to do a search
