radiator recomendations ?
im looking for a rad to complete my setup .. my other components so far are
DD maze 2 .. danner model 3 .. custom resivior .. i was thinking of the black ice 2 .. but i have all jmc 120mm fans in my case .. 69 cfm .. so i dont know if they are strong enough for the black ice 2 rad .. and also the rad is only 3/8 fittings .. would this negatively effect my cooling setup ?? i have a yy cube .. so i cant have a rad wider then 6 inches .. thanks |
Well you know already I am a heater core fanboy, but I thought I would try and address your questions about teh BI2.

http://www.overclockers.com/articles481/index05.asp It looks to me that for the original Black Ice that 75 GPH is the sweet spot for maximum heat dissipation. Assuming that you can still get that flow rate with 3/8" fittings then you aren't going to be affecting the performance of the radiator. Also look closely at the static pressure vs performance data because it also answers your second question: Quote:
http://www.jmcproducts.com/dc_fans/index.shtml Look at that page (use the pulldown to select the size fan you have) and get an estimate of static pressure from the graph. Then look at the graph from the Overclockers article and you will see where you fall on that curve. Hope that helps :) [ 12-20-2001: Message edited by: pHaestus ] |
where would you get 69 cfm jmc's from? are u sure u dont mean 61 cfm, because thats the one at caseETC.. which has a static pressure of .007 in H2O (note static pressure means nothing to me).. i was looking for the panaflow 120mm low speed for comparison but all i could find was http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/...pdf/fba12g.pdf which only has maximum air pressure, 3.30 mmH2O (also means nothing to me)

hey
yeah it was the 61cfm JMCs |
Get one 120 mm H1A blowing through and throttle it down if u want.
it has over 2.0 static pressure. Although you should really consider the heatercore for low noise. Bigger air chanels and more surface area for cooling. Less speed needed for ur fans because pressure is reduced. |
btw do u like your jmc's? they are rated at 26 dBa, are they really that quiet? can u even hear them when using your pc normally? i was thinking of getting some instead of my current (noisy!) sunons but easier for me to get panaflows here (australia) which are rated at 30 dBa but im not sure in ill be able to hear much of a difference between 26 and 30 dBa.
about your rad unless your running a peltier or soemthing i think even with those low speed fans your would be able to cool your processor pretty well, even if you cant overclock much i dont think you got many better options than that. |
Get the BlackIce 2...
I'm using BlackIce 2 with 2 130CFM Delta fans and it's working great. I don't have any experience with heatercores or other radiators but to me BlackIce2 is perfect. |
I have the 1989 Ford Escort w/AC heater core.
I love it. It's 6" wide 8" tall 2" thick cools like a dream. I toned down my YS Tech 136 cfm fan to a nice noise level, and still get great results. |
thanks for all the replies
i decided to use this aquacoil rad i had lying around .. ill use that for awhile until im more comfortable with w/cing my other components are maze 2 and danner model 3 .. im only cooling my cpu .. no pelts or anything .. umm the jmc fans are nice .. very quiet =) quiet is good .. better then my 2 80mm delta screamers |

Personally I use a comair rotron fan that has a max static pressure of 0.78 inH2O. I use it throttled back though as it's noisy, but big fans throttled work better than small fans flat out. EDIT: btw where'd the 2.0 figure come from? http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/...pdf/fba12g.pdf says 6.8 mmH2O for the H1A, that's 0.27 inH2O for you US guys ;) [ 12-23-2001: Message edited by: Butcher ] |
when u throttle back a fan does it static pressure change? and btw how u work out mmH2O ---> inH2O?
|
Yes if you throttle the volts going to your fan you will decrease its static pressure rating. The better the fan the lower the rating drop though. In general compare the static pressure with its noise. Get the one that has the lowest ratio.
1 inch = 2.54cm = 25.4 mm well the site says the pana has a rating of 6.8 mm of water. u have to use the law or porportions i think... (1"/25.4mm)=(x"/6.8mm) or 6.8=25.4x or x=6.8/25.4 or x=.26777 chip recommends a fan with at least .20" of h20. this fan makes it easy. [ 12-24-2001: Message edited by: Badly_Wired ] |

nice cube =)

the aqua cube rad will be fine.
my personal recommendation is to go with a fan that is quite powerful, you can always slow a fast fan down with a fanbus, rheobus, PWM, but it is somewhat harder to speed a slow fan up |
