How to clean rust from the inside of a block??
 

this is my block, the problem is that when i soldered it, the copper got all black. theres any kind of liquid that would dissolve this rust?

the block is made of copper and brass

PS: when is a block too heavy?? mine weights 600g, is that too much??

It is not rust, but like rust. Its oxidation from the heat of soldering. Get some Soldering Flux (which you should have had to solder it in the first place) and get the block pretty hot again and let the flux melt inside it. Swirl the liquid flux around inside and a lot of the oxidization will resolve itself.

600 grams is considered 2 times more heavy than the recommended weight of a mount. However, if you consider that they have pressure recommendations added for better transfer of heat, the weight actually could mean you don't need as much pressure, and the board should accept it.
You may consider a light grit sandpaper to remove that stuff. I have seen some good elbow grease do what chemicals only dreamed.

Problem being thats its hard to sand inside the block, through just the inlet/outlet ports.

For a start it is not rust. Only Iron (And its derivitives) rust. Other metals oxidise and corrode, but these are not called rust.

Some decent hydrochloric acid might be ok at removing a fair bit of the crap. Also the flux idea might work.

i've actually been thinking that coca-cola poured in a left overnight might work, not tried it myself yet.. but it has crossed my mind as an option

White vinegar will probably do the trick. For sure a product called CLR will do it. Try white vinegar first, it's real cheap.

Not like they (AMD) "recommend" a water block anyway. It is to heavy when it breaks something. Untill then don't worry about it. :evilaugh:

BTW, the 300g max weight recomendation, it refered to HS mounted directly to the socket, not to the motherboard holes.

You know I never weighed one of my blocks... Never crossed my mind as being an issue. The 4 mounting holes will hole quite a bit of weight. I would be more worried about side tourqe from the hoses.

ezlid, i tried the vinegar. and unluckily didnt removed the blacks stuff.

although it did remove some of the greenish oxide over de copper.

any other ideas ppl??

i will try coke tomorrow.

PS: jaydee, your blocks are mainly plexi if im not mistaken. i guess the wont weight that much.

mine's base is a 80mm x 60mm x 4mm copper plate.

a 12mm thick, 80mm x 60 mm top.

the heart is similar to the top but its hollow, the walls are 5mm thick.

this thing is really massive.

Most people have rigs where the mobo is in a standing position and therefor I don't see why the extra weight should add to the die-pressure.

600grams is a lot but I guess you will be mounting it through the holes in the mobo? And also. the weight recomendations is for HS. A HS oftens builds a lot on the height and therefor adds quite more momentary force (?? I'm swedish) to the socket.

seriously, dont try coke or pepsi. Oh ketchup, dont try that either. You could allways take dremel and use the buffing tool, or somthin. Dont worry about the blocks wieght, but then again those thermalright heatsinks...

You have only seen a very small portion of my blocks then. Most the blocks I have made are 5/8" thick (1/2" thick bottom with pattern milled in it, and a 1/8" top) made of copper or aluminum. I just started using plastic recently.
