Pelt cooling your Northbridge.

Would you gain any overclocking performance if you mounted a pelt on your northbridge, and then cooled that with water.

Various size pelts could be found here, the size is up to you.

post comments, or whatever. would this improve performance?

jaydee 05-17-2003 09:43 PM

Try it and let us know. :) I never seen it done before.

SparkedFire 05-17-2003 09:46 PM

well it was just an idea, i dont even have a watercooling sys yet but hope to have one soon.

SparkedFire 05-17-2003 10:06 PM

here is a like to a site that offers pelts in a variety of sizes. Link. and Link 2.

well, [H]ard|OCP attached a Vapochill to their NB, they oc'd so high, the heatspreader fell off of the P4

SparkedFire 05-18-2003 11:55 AM

You do know that the northbridge chip is not the CPU socket, right. I am sort of confused by your post.

believe me he knows :)

What he is trying to say is that once [H] got a P4 3.06 to over the 4Ghz barrier with a phase change unit on their nb.

But at some time they heard a pop. it was the heatspreader which moved and the processor has no contact with the cooling causing it to "crack".

basically:)

Ah, i see they did use phase change on the NB. So wothout the phase change or other cooling on the NB they would not have been able to achieve the OC'ing they did?

Of course i wouldn't use phase change so s standard NB waterblock from DD would need to have a cold plate added. Does anyone suggest a pelt for this when i try this out.

what i could say at this point is what jaydee116 said, try it and then tell us how it did :D

80w pelt cooled NB
abit nf7 2.0
11x234mhz dc 5,2,2,2
only "1.73v" vdd perfectly stable..
4th fastest geforce4 in 2k1 ever. ;)

Balinju, you might want to give me a month or so untill this test could be a reality. By that time i will be pondering how to use pelts on my DDR
.

Untill then i will work out specs for my NB cooling exparament. Give me a day or so :dome: .

Watch it buddy! I will need to get some Z block specs (dementions) or i will need to design my own block:( . I dont have much skill nor do i have the proper equipment for this, so i will basiclly throw out ideas unless i can get the specs for the DD Z block chipset cooler. Havn't had anything good to say about DD . Let me go to school tomorrow with some graphing paper and go to work on ideas.

qwerty57 05-18-2003 08:57 PM

the z-block works perfectly with a 40x40mm 80w tec as thats what I run on my NB

Seriously, take yout time and to it as right the first time as possible. Think it out. Don't leave out the costs of the equipment and the specs of the equipment to run the pelt either. It will take time and money to make it work. We all know this all to well. I am in the middle of a project that started 3 monthes ago and still have a good 1-6 months left. :D

Brad 05-19-2003 04:54 AM

it will only improve your performance if you are being fsb limited by your chipset. I considered it with my 760MPX chipset, simply because it heats up so much and was definately the limiting factor in my overclock over 180fsb

But if you've got a new canterwood board, then you won't need to worry about northbridge cooling until you get to ~320fsb.

Of course those two mentioned are extremes - what chipset are you running?

SparkedFire 05-19-2003 07:16 AM

Let me hit this one at a time. I have been sleeping:p.

qwerty56: Ah, how exactly would you put a pelt there? I thought a 40mm pelt would most likley work, but what about a cold plate? It would be very hard to use one here, and i think 80watts would be overkill? I put up some links earlier of different pelt sizes and wattages which could be used.

jaydee166: I have a design i will work on in my next class, I dont need a power supply because it will pull only a little power. I dont expect to pull 226watts here. A good power supply in your comp will be more than enough for the pelt. I will most likley built it out of Aluminum 6061 since money is an issue here, and the increased performance is not crucial.

Brad: I have the 845PE chipset. I hope to push my comp to the max and achieve insane OC'ing so any means of cooling is welcomed. I currently have heat spreaders and 3 fans blowing on my DDR .

Thanks Guys for your intrest, and thoughts.:)

I'm back. I have worked on some specs and shoud have them out tomorrow. Here is a draft.

SparkedFire 05-19-2003 04:14 PM

Those black things in layer 3 are pins, by the way. Oh, and the circles in Layer 1 are where the fittings go. To give you an estimate, the block will be about 40mm x 40mm. Not including the protrusions on the side of it for mounting.

SparkedFire 05-20-2003 02:57 PM

Does anyone have some thoughts before i begin to work out the specs? Thanks.

Balinju 05-20-2003 03:24 PM

just a question, is layer 2 with no botom and no top?? just walls???

if yes y don't you mill the pins on the bottom of layer 2 and like that you will avoid a layer.

SparkedFire 05-20-2003 03:29 PM

I do not have the equipment to mill so using layers and drilling holes in the third layer and inserting pins yould be the easiest way to do this.

Balinju 05-20-2003 03:39 PM

why don't you look at a #rotor style block?? just don't make too much pins

SparkedFire 05-20-2003 04:01 PM

Huh? I'm a newbie so please help me out. #rotor block? Is #rotor one of the guys on the forum?
