Hi - what kind of copper should I use to mill out waterblocks? And where do you reccomend getting it? Thanks!

What Since87 said. How much to you want to order and what thicknesses? I will be making a new order through onlinemetals.com myself soon and if we are ordering the same sizes we can merge the order and save some cash as larger quantites is a a lot less than small one's. I can order it, cut it to whatever size you want (no charge for cutting!) and ship it to you. If you want do that you can just pay me through paypal, check or whatever. I am in Spokane and onlinemetals is in Seattle so I usually get it within 2 days. I can cut it to size and ship it to you. I belive your in Oregon? So it would not take to long.

Your price would be whatever the price I bought it for from onlinemetals.com plus shipping. If I bought a 24" stick it would come out to about $4.34 plus shipping for that 2x3x.5 peice.

OK - well when are you ordering? I won't know what I need for a couple of days methinks. Though I may also find out what I need tomorrow morning when I meet with my friend with a mill.

I was going to order Tuesday or Wendsday. 27th/28th. I can hold off to if you need more time. Will be a couple weeks before I can mill anything anyway.

Micheal!, have you thought about making some GPU/NB blocks up while you have the milltime?. You could get away with using one base design for both, the mountings use different sized spacings though for GPU & NB, but these can be included in the tops or just use a piece of metal with slots in for a hold down...

Ordered this morning.

24" of 1/8" x 2"

12" of 3/16" x 2"

24" of 1/4" x 2"

12" of 3/8" x 2"

12" of 1/2" x 2"

I will probably be using most of this myself but if anyone needs a peice 2"x3" of those sizes above let me know as that what it is all going to get cut into. redleader has dib's on a few peices. I hope to get it tomorrow as onlinemetals is only 300miles from here. Usually get the stuff the next day I order it. I will try to cut it this weekend depending if I have my daughter or not for the weekend. If not I will do it Monday morning before work. providing I get it tomorrow. If I don't I will get it Monday and cut it Tuesday.

Just got the Copper. I havn't had a call from the ex saying I have the kid this weekend, so if that holds true I will cut the copper tomorrow morning and try to ship redleaders's peices out aswell.

What sizes did you want redleader? Accidently deleted your e-mail. :( I can also cut a few less than 3" of you want. the width is 2" so 2" x whatever.

I don't really know what I need so I'll take your advice.

Hows 3 1/4 inch pieces and 1 3/8 inch thick piece sound? I just want the copper so that once I get back to school this fall I have some stuff to work with.

Is 2*3 a good length and width? Keep in mind I just want some basic material to practice with.

That should do you fine. 2" x 3" is pretty standard. Just enough room to get the 4 mounting holes of the current AMD boards. If you have a P4 then I have no clue. You will have to work out some mounting adapter. Will be cutting the peices tomorrow morning if the bandsaw is working and has a good blade on it.

I just found a good source for copper and other non-ferrous metals (they don't do any steel). It is an operation called "Metal Source" and is a division of Admiral Metals. It runs out of their warehouse in Woburn, MA. Phone # is 781-932-0482

I don't know if they do net or any other mail order, it seems to me like the kind of place that you need to go to since what they have in stock varies alot.

Admiral Metals is one of the larger non-ferrous metals suppliers in the Northeastern US, and does large custom cut orders for big customers, and some smaller orders at full retail costs, plus cutting charges. However I suspect they would prefer not to deal with someone wanting WB size quantities.

"Metal Source" is their 'surplus' outlet, where they get rid of all the left over bits from when they custom cut a big order. Thus the stock is always changing to some degree, but is mostly smallish peices. Cost is about 1/2 normal retail - for instance all their copper was $4.80 / lb when I got some a couple weeks ago. The catch is that if you want something cut, they have a cutting fee of $16 / cut. This means you are usually better off getting whatever size they have and cutting it yourself. They get a great deal of small shop and hobby user business, and are used to dealing with less than expert folks and small quantity orders. It is a great place if you want to stock up on general stock metal at a good price.

I got a hunk of Cu 3/4" X 3" about 36" long, and a second peice of 1/4" by 3.5" a bit shorter, cost me $76.00 After I've made my blocks I'll likely be looking to either make more blocks for others or sell off my surplus copper depending on which will get me a better profit (I'm out of work and need the money...)
