Slowing down?

im having some 'weird' problems with regards to my cpu..
before when i first had the cpu and the motherboard, i found the limit of the fsb at 192, so i backed down to 190 to be safe. i was using the highest multiplier at the time, 12.5 (im using an epox 8rda+ board) and the speed was good at 2375Mhz or 2.39ghz..
recently i have been having problems with running it at even 12 x 190, so now im having to back down to 11.5 x 190 and as the fsb of the board is at its limit, i dont really want to push it further..
does anyone know whats happening with my cpu? is it dieing or something?
it used to work at about 1.65V @ 12.5 x 190, now its just managing to work at 11.5 x 12 @ 1.6V. even when i push it to 12 x 190 @ 1.7V, it wont finish 3dmark 2001se's default test, it crashes doing the theroy tests... i think its the first one after the nature test that it just stops...
please can someone tell me what the heck is going on? will i need a new cpu?

How long have you had that PSU?

Did you notice any voltage drops?

MadHacker 06-21-2003 11:45 AM

Years ago i use to have a P100. and managed to over clock it to 150Mhz. but after a cople years it got tired and had to clock it down to 125 Mhz. then had to eventualy clock it back to 100mhz.
I find they do get tired so to speak after a while. but that was the CPU. it could also be your motherboard that is getting tired.
i find when it comes to overcloking it only goes as fast as the slowest component.(weekest link)

thats it for my 2 cents worth

voltages arent my psu's great point.. i know that the 3.3v line isnt great as its about 2.6 - 2.7 something..
would a psu really make that much of a difference? if so what psu might you recommend?
the motherboard isnt that old.. i cant understand why that would start to slow down..

heres a screen grab from motherboard monitor.. hope this might help in some way..

Your 3.3 line is still way out of spec. You should take a reading with a multimeter.

Thats an understatement!

I dont have a volt meter and wouldnt have a clue what to do if i had one!!!...
What power supply do you recommend??

bigben2k 06-21-2003 05:34 PM

Tom's hardware rounded up 30 PSUs: you should get your brand name from there.

Antec's are always good. So is PC P & C, if you can afford it.

airspirit 06-21-2003 05:50 PM

Antec Truepower 480W or higher are good for OC on a system that sucks power like yours. Do not go below 400W for any reason.

Besides the 3.3V line issue, I honestly think your processor is just doing the slow burn to death. DLT3C processors do this if you overvolt them too much over stock. I lost three of them before I got a clue (though only two were really my fault ... the third was just a piece of shit). Try the PSU first, because that 3.3V line sucks arse something fierce. If that doesn't work, I promise you: your CPU is burning out.

Phil:

I had a similar problem with my setup (listed below).

My system was unstable over 180FSB and would produce errors randomly in IE.

My solution to the problem was 3 things....

1) replaced my Enermax 550W PSU with the Antec True 550W.

solved HALF my problems.

2) Moved my DIMMS to the closest slots to the CPU.

3) Restored my OS from a disk image I had before I started OC.

YOu can see below what became of those changes.

I would recommend that you replace your PSU; that should help a LOT with stability.

ok, i hate to admit this, but i have a very cheap power supply, but it works very well for me. i've even got my pc oc'd a little bit (about 150mhz or so). it's a deer 425w, i picked it up for $18+ shipping. it runs everything pretty good, and i don't have any trouble with it.

if you're looking for a cheap solution, the deer/L&C stuff isn't *too* bad. i've used them in the past in workstations. it works out ok... might give it a try if you just want to check something out and not spend a fortune.

phill9700 06-22-2003 06:32 AM

i have been warned..

well i was told about a new psu so i think a new one is going to be bought.. you say the antec true power... 550W, that would be enough?
im told so many different things about psu's i have no idea whats good and whats bad.. could someone just outline a few points about them for me? cheers :D
well i was thinking of getting another chip anyways... this one dont clock as well.. oh quick question there.. are you ok to overclock the nuts off of it the first day or is it best to bed it in for a bit? i dunno like a week or something?
this is the replacement cpu if i did get one.. is it going to be a good clocker or not?

XP1700 OEM Thoroughbred cores JIUHB DLT3C 0319vpmw or this one

XP1800 OEM Thoroughbred cores JIUHB DUT3C

i usually burn-in my systems for a couple days before i do anything with them. granted, i'm not an insane OC, but you figure if it's going to die, it'll do it in the first few hours.

and unless you're looking for something really special in a PSU, just get an L&C. i know, i know, i'm talking blasphemy on all the nice ones out there, but i've never had a problem with a cheaper psu... and if they die, they're cheap to replace.

then again if i was running a dual board with raid, i'd probably spend the extra $$ for a nicer psu...

phill9700 06-22-2003 10:03 AM

well...

well i guess i could have pushed it a little far on its first day, i guess it always helps just to burn them in a little anyways, you cant hurt anything by doing it surely..

well im not doing anything major in my pc, its just i want something thats good or better than most because if its going to make a difference, then i may as well make it a good difference to having a bad one..
normally spending more on a psu will give you a chance of having a good one.. theres why theres cd/dvd players out there costing £50 rather than the £1000/£500 i have spent on mine.. id rather have something doing something a little better than 'just doing its job'.. all personnal choices i guess really isnt it?
and of course, i guess it could also be bragging rights as well.. if that makes any difference..

it's fairly true, you get what you pay for, that's why all my hardware (except psu) is all top-notch. however, i also haven't had psu's die on me, except that one time i about electrocuted myself on out-of-phase power.

i honestly am not real sure when it comes to psu's if it's bragging rights or real use. but, i've gotten by with my el-cheapos for a long time. my new machine will probably have a really nice psu.. so we'll see how that goes (500+ watts).

in the end, do what makes yourself feel comfortable. i just feel for the most part, for most of my machines and servers, if the device is out of warranty, which one is cheaper to replace? with these i don't even worry about it, and i've been pretty lucky (knock on wood).

i wouldn't buy anything less than a L&C though. that's pretty much all what i use, for the most part.
